ordered a new springfield 1911

Very nice. Does it have a bull barrel ( a la Kimber) or does it use a barrel bushing?
I think the 4" 1911's make great carry guns. Especially with the new alloy frames.

It's got a bushing. I looked around a bit and I haven't been able to find a dovetail for it. I know I can have springfield put one if I want to pay them to do it, but I don't. I'll probably let it bite me a few times just for fun before I get one. I'm hard headed that way.

Any standard (series 70)1911 part, minus firing pin (38 sized and titanium in SA products) barrel & slide will fit.

Nice weapon. I used to have a 5" barrel version, but I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with it! 
Dad'gum grips were long and thin in my large hand, and it would slide around from the recoil.
I could have bought the larger capacity modification to make it fatter, but I was being transfered to California anyway and didn't want the hassel of being stopped with an armory in my car :tongue2_1

The Mil-Spec and GI are great "retro" guns. But lack the serious features of a modern 1911 that are standard everywhere nowadays: Beavertail safety, commander style hammer, lowered and flaired ejection port, dove-tailed sights of either Novak or Heinie style, FLAT mainspring housing, stainless barrell and match grade barrel, etc. So if you want a gun that you will enjoy shooting, get something like the Springfield Basic Loaded model ($700)...

I finally got to take the new 1911 out to the range. I put a quick hundred rounds through it. What a fun gun to shoot. Only bitch I have so far is that I can't get the damn slide to slam home with a magazine in one handed.
Sounds like you need to lube the slide better. on 1911's if you don't have the slide lubed and it is a tight fit, you will get that problem.
So you are saying that you can't get the slide to go fully into battery from simply releasing the slide stop?
Springfields are tight - likely this will go away after about 500 rounds. In any case some shooters feel the correct procedure is to pull the slide back with your free hand to release the slide stop and then allow the slide to go home. Depends on who you talk to.
