One more question... change of rating

One more thing folks,

I'm a Dep're, and signed up for non-aircrew AD. My ultimate goal is to do extremely well as enlisted, apply for STA-21 and other programs, for a SNA option.

Although, I am seriously debating whether to change my rating to MMS, Machinist Mate - Submarine. Bad move considering I want to eventually become a Naval Aviator. Will that decrease my chances of getting the pilot option under STA-21?

My reason for doing so was manning is very low in MMS rating, which will allow me to advance much quicker and prove my ability to do so, and since there aren't many folks wanting Subs, that fact I am a Sub guy might stand out in the boards mind.

Any advice would be appreciate,
Thanks again,

I don't think that should be an issue. STA-21 doesn't restrict what you can select based on your enlisted rate. The only exception to this is that if you want to go CEC through STA-21 you have to be a seabee, but obviously, that doesn't apply to you.

my roommate is a nuke ET from submarines. He got picked up for the pilot option the first time he applied for the STA-21 program. he thinks your recruiter is telling you that the NUKE field has a higher percentage of people that get picked up for officer programs... that is the reseaon he went nuke. and he got picked up. he also says don't worry about engineering. The school is challenging but well worth it. By the way he is a history major....

navymech may have been talking about A gang. He never mentioned nuke.
There are some restrictions on STA 21. A CEC option applicant must be a Seabee. A Nuke option applicant must be a nuke. A SEAL must be a SEAL, Intel must be an IS, etc. However, Pilot, NFO, Swo, and CORE are open to any rating.

Not sure how you would get interviews from people in your command or a CO interview unless you use the instructors at the school and the CO of the A-school.
But also thinking about that, once you submit your package, your command should put a lock on you so you can't transfer:
In OPNAVINST 1420.1A, it states:
"Candidates for STA-21 who receive PCS orders on or after the STA-21 application deadline shall not be transferred until officially notified of selection or nonselection to STA-21"
That would be harder than hell to hang around A-school for at least 4+ months.

I dunno. Best bet would be to ask the career counselor there and see what he/she says.
