Are junior officer promotions, specifically in aviation, more or less automatic assuming you perform adequately during flight training? In general, how long does it take to get promoted to O2, O3, etc. How contingent is promotion on performance, time in, and job? What is an officers average rank after 20 years?

I am assuming that the higher rank you achieve the more performance based promotion becomes. Any information or comment would be appreciated.

Last I knew, O-1 to O-2 to O-3 were automatic promotions with 2 year intervals unless you murder someone or something vile and nasty.

After that, it's another 6 years on average after O-3 to get O-4. Beyond that, I'm not sure.

I'd think after 20 years in service, people who were generally positive for the Navy would at least retire as a Commander as a minimum. My uncle retired as an LCDR, but that was after an inter-service transfer from the Army to the Navy. I don't know all the details on that either though. Who knows.

Beh, I'm only a civilian hoping to get in, I'm sure there are many more people on here that know better than I ;)

I have a question to add on this topic. I have read almost everywhere, that if you accept a promotion, you are also accepting an addition to your contract. Is this true? If so, in what circumstances? I know that pilots have 8 years to commit after winging, but if an extension to their contract exists after every promotion acception, then the contract must be lengthy.

I just thought of something..... if you accept a promotion, is the addition to your contract to be ran concurrently? Thanks for the clarification.

Promotion and contract time are separate. You don't incur more time for each promotion that you take. The only things that I know of that will add time to your contract are special schools or Navy paid postgraduate programs, and I believe those times run concurrently with whatever initial contract time you are fulfilling. For example, I owe 5 years for my initial officer contract, but now I incur an 8 yr. obligation after wings. I do not owe a total of 13 years, I just owe 8 after wings since that is the longest obligation.
