Officer Candidates and ID Cards

Spot

11.5 years and counting boat free
I'm currently going through NSI and have a quick question. Do officer candidates need to get new ID cards that indicate that they are officer candidates or do they keep their enlisted ID cards until being commissioned?

Usually they'll give you a new ones that you'll only use for OCS. A couple of the prior enlisted (not all) kept and used theirs, but most people made the trip to PSD twice.

But he's not in OCS.

I really don't think you're going to get a new ID card until you get commissioned or get promoted another paygrade. There's really no need. Even as an OC, you're still enlisted. And that won't change until commisioning day.

I think it depends on your ROTC unit. I'm at ODU and upon checking in from NSI we got issued new ID cards and base stickers. The ID cards read Rank as OC and pay grade as STDT.

I also depends on who is issuing the ID. While at NSI I got frocked E-6. When I went and got my new ID in Newport I inquired about having my rank listed as OC and was told that that was not even an option. About a year ago I lost my wallet and had to have a new one issued at a local AFB and they had no problem listing my rank as OC. I guess it may vary from unit to unit but most people here just use their enlisted ID.

Alot has to do with PSD. I was in the second class that went through NSI and acouple of guys went and tried to get the IDs changed to OC, they were told they would screw up their pay and this other crap, so they didnt. I really dont see a reason to get a new one, I think it is better when you show your ID while wearing officer uniforms, good fun.

I was a HT2 when I went to OCS, I just kept my ID card until graduation. I believe all prior enlisted or BDCP people kept theirs, unless OC2 was a promotion for them.

It's a legitimate question like Hourocket pointed out...I am sure that some over-zealous gate sentry might raise an eyebrow when a guy that has an enlisted ID is wearing officer uniforms.

except he wouldn't be wearing an officer uniform....he'd be wearing an OC uniform

Right you are Steve...he would be wearing what appears to be an officer uniform to the untrained eye...I actually got mistaken for an officer and a chief in the last hour.

I got mistaken for an Ensign every where I went because I held a billet at my NROTC unit which requires you to wear the gold bars because you are "staff", they are a little smaller than Ensign bars, but you have to really know what you are looking at. Before that it was always a Chief because of the anchors.

Dating myself, but I was commissioned in the old ECP program, went to Jacksonville University for ROTC and was issued an ID card with OC as rank, STDT as paygrade by Mayport PSD. Also got blue stickers, neither one was because I asked for them, it is just what we got at the time.

I still have an enlisted ID. I made second after getting to NROTC and now have a PO2/ E5 with a picture of me in khakis.
Here, OC's who are staff do not wear the gold bars, we continue to wear the anchors.
