NSI info sought

I will be checking into NSI on Feb 19 and would like to know if someone could give me some up to date gouge on a few things.

First, when they say, "Navy issue swimming trunks", what exactly does that mean? I could only come up with the khaki diver trunks.

Second, how picky should I be about how my "working" uniforms look. Are they going to be offended if my utilities are well used?

Third, what is the rate of disenrollments and for what reason do people usually get disenrolled?

I realize these are some pretty stupid questions but I'm a bit anxious and was wondering if anyone could shed some light for me.

Thanks......

For the swimming trunks they may be talking about the blue pt shorts with liner. Those were the swim trunks in boot (as you already know). Typically the UDTs are worn only by BUD/S, EOD, SAR, and those who want to look extra gay running around base. Since you are trying to become an Officer spending a few bucks to get your Utilities up to speed will be money well spent. Their first impression of you in uniform will say a lot regardless of how pointless it may seem or actually be. Cant say about the disenrollments but the only people I know who were booted couldnt handle the academics, but it didnt seem like they were trying to hard either. You have a great opportunity so good luck and when you get the bars remember where you came from.

Blue PT gear is used in NSI, same as boot camp. So get the blue shorts and Navy shirt. Also the sweats.

You will not wear utilities will in training at NSI unless you check-in a month early or so, other than that it's back to smurf gear until khakis come through issue.

All the disenrollments I have heard of have all been "DOR" (drop on request) because it was not what the individual had in mind.

Considering your location you could go talk to some of the OC's at Old Dominion, they should be able to tell you what to expect.

If you have more questions IM me and I'll get you the answers.

Some info may be out of date, I was there Spring 2003.

Ditto about everything else. Number one reason for disenrollments: alcohol related incidents (mainly DUIs, unless you were a marine there, then you could get two DUIs, come back drunk, get in a fight and break a window and all is forgiven) and just acting stupid.

Agree with everything...we had 3 people kicked out on alcohol issues, they dont mess around with that stuff.

If you're going to BOOST, you may need your utilities. I don't think I brought mine, I can't remember. All I do remember is never wearing them. Since you're going to the winter class, you'll be expected to get about two or three sets of winter blues, since that is the primary uniform for a winter NSI class. If you have winter blue pants in awesome condition, bring them and save your money. If you have CNT white pants in new condition, bring those as well. The winter blue shirts tend to show where they had patches, so don't bother bringing those (except for the one you wear to check in). They say to bring dress blues, but we didn't wear them. After checking in in winter blues, I was in civvies until the morning training started. That day we were in PT gear and stayed that way for the first week. The winter blues are the first uniform they tailor.

PS They kicked a few out for cheating.
One night, on BDO watch, one of the OC's used the BDO key to get into the instructors' office. He snagged one of the tests and shared it with a few friends. Suddenly, someone in danger of failing pulled off a 100%. Upon investigation, they found out what happened. About three were kicked out because of it. They were masted, busted down, and they were wearing utilities while mopping the stairwells at Nimitz Hall.

The main reason that I saw last year for getting the boot were stupidity issues, and one person that was grossly overy weight. The guy showed up 60 lbs over the max, and it wasn't muscle that put him over. So, make sure you show up within standards, and don't do anything stupid. This is a great opportunity, don't fu<k it up.
