Ok, shock, gasp, this thread is not aviation related, but I put together my new christmas present, and am very happy with it. I haven't upgraded my computer since college. Gatordev and Steve Wilkins can recall that back in the day, lol. Anyways, a 300mhz Intel chip and 8gig hard drive just weren't cutting it.

Well, I was going into different electronics stores yesterday trying to find a PSP (if you want to talk about that, we can start a new thread)... and I stumbled across a ASUS A8N-SLI DELUXE motherboard. I have been waiting for these new NForce4 motherboards to come out on Newegg or on Pricewatch, but most of the places that list them, say not in stock, or they are gouging on the prices.

Here is the link, if you want to know what the hell I am talking about: http://usa.asus.com/powerup/main.htm

Anyways, bought the motherboard, an AMD64 3500 (dude, no way can I afford an FX or the 4000, maybe if I was single, lol), and I got an Leadtek Winfast 6600 GT video card to drive my wife's games of solitaire (joking, well, maybe not), and finally two sticks of 512mb CAS 2 DDR400 memory. Took me about an hour to put it all together last night, had to remove the old motherboard, clean the case out, put in the new power supply, new fans, etc. I haven't set up a RAID yet, I only have a 200 gig 7200rpm hard drive in right now. I set up and installed windows in less than 20 minutes though, was blazingly fast.

Still have some more upgrading to do, I want to purchase a couple of Western Digital Raptors (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-160&depa=0) (10,000 rpm), and get a DVD-RW drive.

Anyways, am happy to have a fast computer again. Everything is installed and running software wise now, and I imaged the drive to make a back up so I don't have to start from square one again, lol. Oh, who else has had to go through Microsoft's phone in registration? Since I changed all the components in my computer, it wouldn't let me register online, so I had to call them, from of all places Japan, that WAS interesting.

Now to install Doom3 and put it through its paces, muhahaha.

Once the availability of the hardware (in this case the motherboard) increases, then you will stop seeing the price gouging. Here is what I paid in Japan, estimating the Yen conversion:

$220 ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe
$230 AMD64 3500 Socket 939 cpu (retail with fan)
$200 Leadtek WinFast 6600 GT PCIexpress
$140 1gig (2 sticks of 512mb DDR400)
$40 ATX 500w power supply (needed a new one, with more juice)
$8 20 to 24 PIN ATX to EATX power supply connector (moboard uses a 24 pin connector, vice a 20 pin)

Roughly $800 bones. You can probably do a better job pricing online, and not paying tax, but then you have the shipping costs. After reading alot of reviews, and looking at benchmarks, for me, this offers the best upgradability path. Next year when the price of a 6600GT video card is less than $100, I will buy a new one, and go SLI, with both video cards, to keep up with the market. Also, offers the ability to scale up the hard drives, expand the memory, and of course put in a faster 939 socket CPU if I ever need it. I think that this motherboard will serve me well for quite some time.

I went with the 6600GT, vice the 6800GT or the x800 ATI cards based on price, and plus the benchmarks it was getting running HL2 and DOOM3 at the settings I would use (1024), ~70 fps. Was a nice price point for me, vice $400-500 for the other cards.

Just my 2 cents.

I feel like I'm watching a Charley Brown episode and you're the teacher. When my computer sh!ts the bed I'll go to WallyWorld and buy another. "I want a gig of motherboard and 24 pin harddrive with an IntelPentium megabyte! Oh, and it better have two fans so my wife can play solitaire!"

Wow, I wasn't able to locate any amd mobo's w/ PCI express yet. Though I did not check japan. While checking this all out did you find out the difference between the 939 sledghammer core and the 939 clawhammer if there is any difference?

jboomer, hey I DID warn that it wasn't aviation related, lol. For the run of the mill computers for the kids and the wife, they get the store bought ones, for me, I like to build my own computer. Ok, I am a computer geek.

perchul, the new wave of AMD motherboards suppporting PCIe I believe are just starting to hit the streets. I like the fact that these high end power hungry video cards now can get all their power from the moboard instead of an external power supply. I actually only found one AGP high end (ATI x800 or NVIDIA 6xxx), all of them were PCIe. I don't have anything to really base the difference on the core, just the articles I read on anandtech.com and tomshardware. All I know, is the damn thing is fast.

My Dell 8400 has PCI express however the software will not catch up with the hardware technology for a little while they say. I don't know what other components besides a graphics card would be able to utilize PCIe, because they do provide an extra slot. Good call on getting one gig of ram webmaster, thats one mistake i made. I only have 512 an am crashing my computer every other day running about 650, even though the processors only going at about 60%. Eventually I'll have to dish out more money for that extra stick.

I really thought a long time about getting a Dell 8400, since they run such outrageous deals on them, or sell them for dirt cheap in their refurbished section. They ran the 41% off coupon recently that I missed, but I ended getting a 25% off DELF coupon for the 2001 DELL LCD (20"), for $500 with free shipping and no tax.

I got tired of waiting, and decided to build it myself. I don't know what I am going to do with the other two PCIe slots, like you said, I don't think everything has caught up yet. I still have two memory slots left over, so maybe another 2 sticks of 512 some day?!?!? hmmm....

First have to go for the new hard drives and the DVD RW.

Oh, hell no. Wife, kids, or any other family for that matter.....they get hand me downs. If it isn't good enough for them and they don't want it....well, at least I get to keep the case.

Nothing better than building twice the computer for half the price. Have done it twice before (with help of John on the first one) and looking to do it again here pretty soon.

Wow, John, you're finally coming into the 21st century. I guess the rugrats help realocate the funds. ;)
