Looking for a place in Corpus Christi, TX this winter??

I know of a particular 2 bed / 2 bath 1185 sq ft apt in Corpus at the very nice Baypoint Resort Apts. They are the nicest and cleanest in town, so well worth the little bit extra in rent. The gal is giving a great deal if anyone's interested in this place. Free rent for Dec 2004 and if you move in by 2005 there's some cash, but the management says you have to go through her since it's on her lease. The management says she can do this to find new tenants so she won't have to pay a fine for breaking her lease. She really just doesn't want to pay rent for a place she's not living at and she'll negotiate with you. I've seen these apts and they're very clean. My fitness center is only open till 11:00 pm and Baypoint's has 24hr access. The view of the bay and NAS airfield is to die for. No other place in Corpus has that.

Be prepared to pay mucho moola for that place. It reminds me of a college type apartment..which aint bad, lots of parties. Bevo will tell you not to move into Sugar Tree which i agree 100%.

The theft is pretty damn bad as Bay Point as well. I know of several people that got robbed while living there. One guy had his tool box stolen out of the back of his truck. It must have been over 400 pounds, but they got it out anyway. If I was going to stay at an apartment in Corpus, it would be "The Beach Club" down on the Island. There is only a couple of lights that you have to go through to get to base, and the crime is not nearly as bad as it is on the other side of the bridge.

I had several thousand dollars worth of theft and damage done to my truck while I was at Sugar Tree. That complex should be on the off limits list, not just because they don't give a damn about security, but they really rip you off when you move out. They charged me for all kinds of BS cleaning that they never did, and they tried to claim that I had not given them notice. They have a habit of doing this kind of thing to Navy people since they know that we have to pay. All in all, they ended up costing me about $600 in bogus charges.

If anyone is going to Corpus, make sure that you get an alarm on your car. There are people there that will break your window just to steal the change out of your ash tray. Do not leave anything that you want to keep in your car overnight, or if you are eating downtown. Corpus is not bad, you just have to learn how to live there.

Looking for opinions

Just looking for some ideas on the Stoneleigh Apartment complex in Corpus Christi. If you have anything to mention about the apartments or the area, please let me know. I'm going to be moving down to Corpus in a couple weeks. The apartments are just south of the two malls that are on S. Padre Island. If you have anything to post, i'd appreciate it.

Those places look like a great place for a meth lab. Baypoint is probably the best place to live on the mainland...go for the island

Thanks GoshHawkeye

I'm lookin for a little more in depth info than that. And, since it is brand new, i guess ANY new building could 'look' like a meth lab waiting to happen. Thanks for the reply though, now, for something completely different.... could someone put up something helpful?!?

My only experience has been w/ Arbors on Saratoga and it has been good so far. I'm not familiar w/ Stoneleigh, but if they're new I guess you can't go too wrong. Watch out for Baypoint...I have heard more bad than good. They have a military clause, but its poorly written and/or used by the management. Regardless of where you go CYA.

So the question on the Stoneleigh apartments is still out there on the table, but i'll throw another one out there that might be easier to answer

What do people know about the base housing there in Corpus Christi?? I've heard it was bad a few years ago, and then a little more recently it was good, but what about now... 2005??

Hit me up if you have any ideas.
Peace

notatus,
I'm not sure exactly where the Stoneleigh Apts. are, as we left Corpus in September so they were probably not built yet. However, if not going with Baypoint or Sugar Tree apts. (both of which I've read nothing particularly good about) and you want to stay on the mainland I'd go with apartment complexes in the southside area- these include:
Camden Breakers (on Staples, S. of Saratoga)
Camden Copper Ridge (on Saratoga, just west of Staples)
Arbors on Saratoga (On Saratoga and Cimarron)
San Marin (On Staples, just south of Lipes)
Walnut Ridge (On Staples, North of Saratoga)

If you are thinking about possibly renting a house, here's some info:
Here is the company we found our house through: Pacesetter Steel Property Management. They were very easy to work with and I would definitely recommend them. Their rental info includes the pet policy which is good to know right off the bat if you have pets (we have 2 dogs). We lived just east of Staples off of Lipes in a subdivision called Barclay Grove and were quite happy there.

Here's the Caller-Times Rental Search from the Newspaper. It's good to look the addresses up on Mapquest before calling for info to make sure they are in a desirable area.

Here's another company that does long-term (meaning not for vacations by the week) rentals on the Island: Rental Management Company.

Regarding base housing, they were building some very nice looking new housing when we were leaving, but we were told that first priority for those is people living in the existing housing that is being torn down, and there was a long waiting list for those (and they aren't nice AT ALL) when we arrived in Corpus (although we arrived a year ago). Call housing and they will tell you what the current situation is. If you can get in a new unit on base, I'd grab it! They were quite nice looking. We had to have a house with a fenced in yard (because of our dogs) and really, to find something liveable/acceptable for us, we had to pay over what BAH provided (for an 03, married, no kids). When we were looking for rental homes a year ago, nice housing was not easy to find.

I second on San Marin. I live there now and they've been great. No problems with maintenance - they're extremelely fast about it even on Saturdays. I live with my fiance and they were more than willing to write a clause in the lease saying if I got military orders that he was also released from the lease. And I've just told them I was breaking my lease to leave and they had no problem and prorated my rent. I highly recommend it.
