New "old" rifle

Finally got the build done on my M40A1 'replica' from the 1970-80's. With the exception of the action being 2000 numbers to high, everything else is true and correct Marine Corps issue. Initial 5 rounds 1.2" at 100 yards before scope adjustment and any real break-in on the rifle. I have since shot groups of .45 and .40 inches at 100 yards and .98 inches at 200 yards for five shots, so it's coming in nicely.

Get some Federal Premium .308 (180 grain Nosler Partition) and you'll have a perfect rig for long-range western hunting.

Ahhhh. Remington 700. I own 3 of them and all are tack drivers. The 7-08 Varmiter heavy barrel shot .46" out of the box with the 168 gr Sierra MatchKing, a load I had developed for another 700. I dropped it into a H&S Precision thumbhole stock and put a Leopold 6.5X20 scope on it. It printed 7.8 " at 500 M on a windy day. Good stuff...:)

Thanks for all the comments guys! This one is a tribute gun to all the Marine Snipers who keep our asses safe. Actually it is 'designed' to shoot the 175gr stuff as the primary round, and that is what the scope is calibrated for. As far as hunting, yep, been known to do that- Primarily deer in Louisiana and Texas. I had one shot at an elk in Colorado a number of years ago, only about 400 yards, but when I looked at where I was, where he was, and what I would have to do to get that sucker out, I passed on the shot!

I do shoot other long range stuff, primarily with an M-24 (read Remington 700 heavy barrel Army sniper rifle) with a 10x Loopy on it. In that one I shoot Federal Match 168gr BTHP and yes, they are VERY accurate. Best group at 600 yards was 4.4 inches for 5 rounds, at 1000 yards, 8.2 inches for 5 rounds. The really bad part is I'm a piker compared to the kids I shoot with at Quantico! They are shooting 3.5 inch groups with 10 rounds at 600 and 6-7 inch groups at 1000 with 10 shots! They are GOOD!!!!:D

Very nice. What can one expect to spend when putting together a rig like that?

What do y'all think about the Rem 700 PSS 308? I've been thinking about getting one for long range paper punching topped with a good Nightforce scope.

Any opinions on either?

Nice to see your rifle. It is hard to beat an old Rem700 for a base. Mine is in 30/06 in a Brown Precision stock with a Leupold 2x7. Put it together about 30 years ago and it still shoots sub-minute.
Are any of the guys you shoot with in the USMC Scout/Sniper Association? My number is 198.

Pugs, whereinhell is that? I'm out of Alexandria, VA if it's within 2-3 hours, I'll give it a try! I couldn't shoot this one though, too heavy, but I do happen to have a little M-4 :)

E5B- How about WAY to much... sigh... Over $3000. 700 PSS is the same thing as an M-24, it is the police version and also very accurate!

FlyinRock- I shoot out of Quantico, but I'm not a member since I was Navy. Thanks for your time and service!

Sorry, dropped lock on this.

Atglen is up 95 about an hour from Baltimore. If it's an M-4 in 5.56 it won't be enough to drop the RAMS at 500 meters. They weigh about 40 lbs. Generally minimum Caliber is 7mm to get the job done unless you're much better than me and can pick where in the animal you want to hit and can hit them high. I've seen 169 gr 7mm splash the target and not drop them.

I'm just an "A" class shooter so really just starting out. I shoot it with Cooper M22 in .308 that I've scoped to keep at the 9 limit to stay in Hunter class but next year will likely rescope and move to silhouette class. Doesn't matter much to me. I shoot just to have fun at it and never intend to be serious about it. Was a AAA Skeet shooter when at NUW and can't picture I'll ever have that much time again to dedicate to a single sport.

Well, that is within range, the problem is I don't have a rifle that works since the M4 is not powerful enough and the M40 and M24 are both too heavy....LOL Maybe I'll try to come up and watch. I don't think my beat up old 94 Winchester will work :D

Give me a bit of notice and I'll be glad to load up some extra .308 and you can use my rifle. I have about 2000 Sierra 168 Match Kings on hand and I'm not afraid to use them!
