New Brit Carrier

Each community should have its own bridge. That is the Brits' opinion. As the Japanese DDHs, very similar to helicopter carriers, usually have ASW department which filled with former submariners, I expect that if the Brits are right, Japanese will soon have three islands/bridges - bubbleheads deserve their own, too:cool:

QE is a big ship. Biggest carrier the Brits have ever had by far. Not much smaller than a Nimitz class, a little narrower and shorter. Has the best berthing I have ever seen on a carrier and the bar is a nice size. It has some issues that I didn't care for, but when I worked on this program in the U.K., I came to understand the RNs limitations and some of the reasons she is what she is. Guarantee every enlisted sailor and a majority of the officers on any of our ships would love to be on her. If anyone here ever gets the chance to go aboard her, I highly recommend it.

I'd love to hear more on this.

Same. I feel like the US Navy is playing a game of "I've altered the deal, pray I don't alter it further"

Strange enough, but I'm in either, mostly from the SWO point. Ship essentially has no engineering spaces in common view: both main turbo-alternators are located near the islands. Only small Japanese missile boats had roughly similar engineering arramgement, but it never happened previously on such a large ship.

At least as of a few months ago the Captain of the QE swapped his rank out every time he went on board and off. On shore he wears the rank of Commodore, his official rank, but on the ship he wears the rank of Captain. Apparently you can't be a Commodore and be Captain of a ship in the RN.

"Although Captain Kyd remains a substantive Commodore, he will follow historical custom and routinely wear the rank of Captain Royal Navy in his role as Commanding Officer of HMS Queen Elizabeth." From official RN website, here - http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/QueenElizabeth

Maybe RN drifts away from its practice to call Commodore the CO of the flagship of TF that is less than "fleet" or "squadron" it their historical parlance. Having less than 60 surface ships including minesweepers in a whole Navy, each RN TF is "fleet" nowadays...

When they came on board their CSG equivalent was called Commodore...I don't know if that means anything.

AFAIK, in their tradition Commodore was rather appointment and not rank. An officer in charge of relatively small TF without capital ships (say, a group of two to three cruisers with a division of DDs) earlier, as of WWII, or just like in USN, a DesRon CO (still Captain by rank), later.

RN Commodore = USN Rear Admiral (Lower Half). We actually called one-star Flag Officers from 1982-1986 Commodore, except for a short period when we called them Commodore Admiral, but someone thought that was too confusing with the title Commodore even though we have the same issue with LCDR's and CDR's who are ship captains. Commodore makes a lot more sense than having two ranks with the same title.

And who wants to be seated next to a Brigadier General if you're only a Commodore?

As I understand it, now the title Commodore is now for captains filling positions that would nominally be RADM(lower half) commands, like a training wing, for example?

Who wouldn't want to share a title with these guys?

From the briefs at MCAA this year, it sounds as if Marine JSF and V-22 crews will spend a fair amount of time aboard.

Looked like a great ship.
