I am a rising junior and am considering being a pilot. I have a 3.1 gpa in mathmatics with a minor in comp sci. Also, I have done well with my naval science pts so far. What do I need to score on the astb to be considered for flight school. I also am working towards my ppl I currently have 10 hrs. With a gpa so low by the time I put in my application will I even be considered for a flight slot?

I got in with a 6/6/6 on my ASTB and I only had a 3.2 GPA. I double majored in polisci and history. Your technical majors will help you out, they are given more points than liberal arts majors. Make sure you get the full number of points from your PNS. It is tought to say what you need on the ASTB to get in since the number of slots available flucuates each year. It all depends on how it looks when you select. If there are alot of slots, they let in guys with lower numbers. Less slots, higher numbers.

yeah dude, 3.1 GPA with a math major is not too shabby. my .02 would be to keep up the GPA at all costs. if you can handle math that well, the ATSB shouldn't be a concern.

I would say that the best way to get the full PNS points, which I believe is 99 because they don't give out any 100's, is to stay out of trouble. Of course you should try to do as well academically as you can because that is probably the next biggest thing they look at. Don't worry if you're not the most stellar performer during PT. Make sure you pass your PRT's and exhibit a good attitude during Batallion PT sessions. I think that the only time the CO will take into consideration when assigning his points is the last semester or two you have been there. So try to do your best the spring of your junior year and the fall of your senior year.

That being said, many people ask the question of what they need to score on the ASTB to be considered for flight school. I think you shouldn't worry about minimums. You should put some effort into studying for it and try to get the maximum score. The test is not hard, it isn't the SAT or the ACT, and you can take it again if you screw up. Now the harder question is, what score should you get before you are comfortable with submitting to the board. That's only because whatever you score last is the one that counts. Just get the 9/9/9 and be done with it.

I did well on the ASTB 8/8/8 and OAR 66, but my GPA is only like a 2.8 in ENG. My PFA's and all that are okay, mostly excellents, but I am not well liked around our unit. I just hope the SNA Gods will smile on my lowly soul.

This isn't me, but what about a 2.5 GPA, 4/4/4, good high PFA, and middle tier evals??

I'd say no since it has gotten more competitive. Isn't the minimum 4/5/4 anyhow? I've known people with better stats than that get rejected and that was a few years ago before slots became tight.

kinda off topic but: i don't think ASTB is a good measure of how well you'll do... unless you take it without preparation (i.e. no arco books or gouge). anyone can ace it if you know what type of questions they're going to ask.

i think a better measure of how well you'll do is what grades you got in high school algebra and geometry because you won't be using advanced calculus or anything during flight training... that's what whiz wheels are for!

I don't think anyone can really say what is competitive right now. Those of us that got in were accepted when the Navy still needed a lot of aviators .... i.e. not the way it is now.

Considering there are like 200+ people in a-pool right now and countless stashed at their ROTC unit for an ungodly long time ... I wouldn't be surprised if acceptance rates for SNA dropped significantly at least for a little while...

Sorry ... just the way things worked out.

Wow, it must have gone down since I started IFS. It was like 500+ a month ago.
