Navy OCS questions

Good morning, I am in the process of considering joining the Navy as an Officer. My wife and I met with a Naval Officer Recruiter in Orlando a couple of days ago, and I would like to get a second opinion on some of the information he told us.

He said I would be a strong candidate for getting pro-rec'd for Navy OCS. But it wasn't until I got home and started doing a little research, that I realized that it might be a little more competitive than he made it sound. From your experience, would a candidate with my background be considered a strong candidate? Or was he being a stereotypical recruiter, just telling me what I want to hear?

My background: 27 years old. Graduated from University of Central Florida in 12/04. BS in Management Information Systems with 3.6 GPA. I have worked in the IT field for the last 6+ years. Started as a Help Desk Tech and worked my way up to Network Administrator. Currently I work as an Application Specialist for a Medical EMR Software Development company. I have the following certifications: A+, Network+, Security+, MCP, MCSA, MCSA: Security, MCSE, MCSE: Security.

As far as extracurriculars go, I have numerous hobbies (drumming in various bands, working on computers/networks, photography, running, etc) but was not a member or on the board of any clubs. I can round up very strong letters of rec, but probably not many from active/retired Military Officers.

I am looking to go into the Information Warfare Officer program.

I'm about to start studying for the ASTB exam.

What are the acceptance rates for Navy OCS for someone with no military background or experience? Also, what are the acceptance rates and/or qualifications necessary to get into the IW program?

Thanks in advance for any assistance you can provide!

I'd say 90%ish of those applying directly to OCS (aside from those coming straight from the fleet) have little or no military background before showing up to Newport. For instance, I worked at General Electric before doing the pilot thing.

You can get the rates from your recruiter on IW programs. It's competitive, sure, but your resume looks decent from first glance. Score well on the ASTB, get your package ready, and you'll know pretty quickly what the answer is. Anything we tell you here is just a guess.

To add on to what Synix already stated, don't worry about having recommendation letters from current/prior Military Officers. From my own personal experience as well as what I have seen from others on this board, the important thing is to get recommendation letters from people who know you well. I was selected in the November boards for SWO and IW and have no military experience or military connections. My recommendation letters were from former professors, a former boss, and a close friend/mentor from my highschool and college years. I would say put together the best package you can and give it a shot. The worst that can happen is you are not selected, but you definitely won't be selected if you don't apply. Good luck!

Couple comments.

Officer recruiters aren't like enlisted recruiters for the most part. Especially right now. They may or may not have quotas to meet, but if they do, they aren't having any trouble hitting them. If anything, the Navy and Air Force both are inundated with potential candidates. I would believe him if he says you are a good candidate. They aren't going to want to waste time with someone who isn't, because the odds are they won't get picked up.

It depends on what program you are interested in. Unfortunately, IWO isn't one I have done a ton of research on, but the hardest programs to get into are Intel and SpecOps I believe. They just have so few slots and such high requirements.

A good goal for you to shoot for is a 60+ on your ASTB. My recruiter told me that it's a big selling point when you go before the board. It says to them you are top 10% in test taking/retention, if not exactly intelligence. Whatever they take from it, it helps and the average scores for a lot of programs are right around 60. There are documents that are or have floated around the internets that demonstrate this.

It's a long process for most people to apply. It might take you a few months to get your application ready and out to the proper board, so you have plenty of time to add some other extracurriculars to your porfolio. Also, make sure you have a bangup Mission Statement. I think it's an understated but altogether vital part of the application process.

Best of luck.

Hey I was wondering if you can wear a neoprene knee sleeve during OCS...? Thanks

It'll prolly have to come from the ortho folks at NHCNE, but shouldn't be a big deal. Lots of folks have compression socks and various gear from the docs.

What is the acceptance rate for Navy OCS applicants? I've been finding various ranges of answers and looking for an accurate number.

Aren't you dropping/already dropped from OCS? If you really are that interested you can view the various program/board threads. About half/most of them have selection stats.

Old post but I'll throw in my two cents.

27, decent grades in a non STEM degree, 5 years of private sector work, and a lot of international experience with some foreign language knowledge.

Scored 61 on OAR, PROREC for IWC, Intel, this summer. I want to say a dozen or so got accepted out of over a hundred? Don't quite remember. I was told on the forums I had no shot at IWC and actually had SWO first, IWC second. Denied by SWO and picked up by IWC.

The point is, they look at you as a whole. What you can control now is your OAR score. Rock that and you'll put yourself in the best position you can. There's no harm in applying.

This post is nearly 7 years old. Don't think he is curious applying anymore, haha.

Logan replied a couple weeks ago about acceptance, which is why I replied.

But yeah, the original poster should have definitely gotten his answer by now, hah.

If you look at all the previous boards you are an anomaly, on many fronts, 99 times out of 100 the result would not be favorable. You should go buy a lottery ticket with the luck you are having.

That's the point I was trying to make. You never know until you apply. If I followed yall's advice, I would have gone SWO, Supply and picked another one out of a hat!
