The below is from VADM Aeschbach's AUG22 COMMUNIQUE (Listed for Widest Dissemination). The COMMUNIQUE contains more, but I figured that this blurb would be of most use for those who frequent this website.

IW Officer Accessions. We are making significant strides on multiple accession fronts as we aim to bring in the most talented new accessions to the IW Community.

  • In FY22, the United States Naval Academy (USNA) assessed 34 direct accessions and 15 SWO Options into the IW Community; we should see a slight increase in both in FY23. Additionally, in FY23, 50% of the USNA Midshipmen selected for the IW Community will be Physically Qualified (PQ) Midshipmen that are competitively selected across the URL and IW Community. This is significant as it allows the IW Community to compete for the most talented, interested Midshipmen. This summer marked the second year that we successfully completed a USNA “IW Summer Cruise”, allowing 77 Midshipmen the opportunity for exposure across the IW disciplines. The first two blocks were solely USNA midshipmen and the third block had NROTC midshipmen from MIT, University of Southern California and the University of Missouri in addition to the USNA mids. For each of the three blocks, the first week was in Hampton Roads with visits and demonstrations from local IW commands and ships showing how various IW warfare areas contribute to the overall mission. For weeks two and three, the midshipmen split into individual warfare areas they selected to gain a more in-depth understanding of Intel, CW, METOC, IP, and CWE communities.

  • In FY22, the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) assessed 6 direct accessions and 15 SWO Options into the IW Community; we should see a marked increase to our direct accessions and slight increase to our Options in FY23. We are increasing our direct accessions by +7 a year over the next four years to reach balance with USNA on our number of direct accessions. In addition, FY23 will be the first year ROTC Midshipmen can select an IW Community as a top selection and, for the first time, our senior IW OCM will be a member of the NSTC/ROTC Service Assignment Board.

  • Officer Candidate School (OCS) remains a significant accession source for the IW Community, with 177 Officers commissioned via OCS in FY22. We coordinated with Navy Recruiting Command (CNRC) to expand the Baccalaureate Degree Completion Program (BDCP) to include the IW Community (NAVADMIN 188/22), allowing college juniors the opportunity to be paid for their last two years of college with a guaranteed OCS quota upon graduation. In addition, we are actively working to grow an IW Billet at CNRC to aid in recruiting, OCS accessions, and BDCP coordination.
