Depends on your primary instructor...I had a Marine Harrier driver.

so, uh, he liked the prolonged flare??? the one where you just kinda "hang" there?

also, when I was doing the IFS thing at Eglin, the friggin -15's/-16's would flare until all lift was lost. Eglin has like 9000' rwys, and I swear they would touch the nosewheel 4000' down.

Ya...because all that on-speed flying you do in primary. Try making that argument when you get downed for your C4390 because you can't land a T-34 properly.

I took an educated guess. Consulting AirNav,

rwy 12/30
12005 x 300 ft

rwy 1/19
10012 x 300 ft

we always used 1/19

can someone 'splain to me C4390.

Also, I think we all know this is a joke, right?

4390 is your contact checkride. If you slam that sucker onto the deck at an OLF, you will be coming straight home, no questions asked (until the post-brief of course.)

Yeah yeah I remember my Form 6 solo.... flaps up full stop, greased it on like no-ones business.... landed about 6 inches past the RDO cart. Then in T-44s it was cake to make a nice landing. Kingsville saw a blown tire but on carrier quals I had 8/10 3-wires. And now.... first sim in the rag... "landings need work."

ENSsquid - don't forget to subtract for the BAK-12s at either end at Eglin. You'd look pretty stupid pranging your nosewheel on one of those. :icon_tong

Yeah, though, Eglin is nice for learning landings. Plenty of room to balloon if you hold in too much airspeed on final. I remember flying into Atmore on my first IFS XC and thinking "oh my God, the runway's so short!" (All 6000' of it!)

Speaking of places to fly (and short runways), those with a PPL should check out Dauphin Island. It's a neat little field on the other side of Mobile Bay, and they have a seafood restaurant w/ a free shuttle from the airfield. Took my parents there on my first flight with passengers!
