I am just trying to find out if anyone knows of any good books on historical accounts of Naval Aviation (like from WW1 or WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm). I have a class where I have to write a book report on the Naval Aviation. It really should be interesting. Anyone have any book sugestions?

McCain's autobiography "Faith of My Fathers" was excellent, but I'm not sure if it is closely enough related to Naval Aviation for you.

Naval aviation? WW1? Not too much there ..... which of the other periods interest you most? That is probably how you will do the best book report -- if you are interested in the subject. Then perhaps we can zero in on some titles ... ??

There's a fairly new book out on WWII called "Wing of Gold" that I'm currently working through. Lots of first-person accounts. "First Team" is a very detailed look at the very early engagements of the pacific war.

I dunno if it'll help much, but try that really big US Naval aviation book. not exactly In-depth... but it goes over Naval aviation from the beginning to OEF/OIF

but when it comes to certain eras, these are my picks:
Pilots, Man Your Planes!: The History of Naval Aviation by Wilbur H. Morrison
The Jolly Rogers by Tom Blackburn (WWII)
Fox Two! By Randy Cunningham (Vietnam)
Angles of Attack : An A-6 Intruder Pilot's War by Peter Hunt (Gulf War)
Born to Fly by Shane Osborn (EP-3 Collision in 2001)
Black Aces High by Robert K. Wilcox (OEF)

or if you're interested in the training of Naval Aviators read
Air Warriors by Douglas Waller

My, what a coincidence!</sarcasm>

Wings of Gold - Gerald Astor
Flyboys- James Bradley
Afterburner- John Darrell Sherwood
Airwarriors- Douglas C. Waller

The First two books are world war II (Flyboys however concentrates on the Naval air war of Iwo Jima and Chichi Jima)
Afterburner is a Vietnam Era Book
Airwarriors was written by a journalist based on his observations of the naval aviation training pipeline as he followed a group of SNA's through the pipeline from API to the RAG.

Or if you want this stuff, wait for my book to come out --- it will be the "real deal". The lies and "sea-stories" will be better than anything out there to date. When did you say your report was due ?? :)

"On Yankee Station" by Barret Tillmann. Easy read, great info on Naval Aviation in Vietnam.

Roger that, it's a good book. In the same vein, try "Over the Beach" by Zalin Grant. Fighter Squadron 162 (VF-162), based on the USS Oriskany in the Gulf of Tonkin.

USS ORISKANY, CVA-34, the "O-Boat" ........ CDR Dick "Belly" Bellinger, CO or VF-162 ... "hand-flying" the debrief about his Mig-21 Kill.

Flights of Passage - Reflections of a WWII Aviator, by Samuel Hynes

The book details Hynes who recieved a commision in the Marine Corp, went to Navy Flight school then off to WWII

My grandfather (who was Naval Aviator in WWII and Korea with VF-781) got me this book as a gift for christmas many years ago. As I opened the package, he looked at me and said this is the quintessential book for any young person who dreams of becoming a Naval Aviator. It sounds corny, but I will probably remember that forever.
