Just figured I'd crow a bit; I bought my first historic firearm recently. It's a Mosin-Nagant 1891/30, built in 1943 at Tula Arsenal. IF you don't recognize the name, it was the official battle rifle of the Imperial Russian Army and the Red Army from 1891-1945 (the /30 model was adopted in 1930). Got a good deal on it; Rifle, cartridge case, cleaning kit, bayonet and sling for under $100. Range report to follow when it stops raining up here and I get time to shoot.

Wow, that looks bad-@ss. Wonder if the bayonet has been "inside" any Nazis? Got your WA state CCW yet?

Nope. I wonder if there's any way to figure out where a given rifle was issued, etc. I have a sneaking suspicion that if it'd seen heavy fighting it might not be in very good shape now; then again I know the Russians were horribly short on supplies then, so who knows?

Several parts are from a different arsenal and have serials struck out to match the receiver. Methinks they were awfully short on parts.

Combating TIP training AGAIN?!
Nice weapon...
Let me know how your shoulder feels after you take it to the range...that rifle kicks like a mule!

Zilch

This...is...Caketown!
My friend got one of those for a similar price. It's pretty beefy, the bayonet looks very intimidating.

Great rifle, I bought one about 2.5 years ago. They aren't hard recoilers if you know how to shoulder a rifle correctly :)

To jack my own thread, one of the Scout leaders who taught me to shoot way back when was former Army. He said that his DI gave them the same speech. The sergeant proved it by firing a round from the shoulder and then "shouldering" it against his nuts and firing another. Unfortunately, another private decided that that looked too easy, did it wrong when no one was looking, and ended up on the ground in considerable pain.

Did you pick that up at Big 5 in Oak Harbor?? I shot one a few years back...accurate up to about 50 yards, but one hell of a kick.

Yeah, it's a Big 5 special. They also had an SKS there too for about $200 IIRC.

I bought one of those when I turned 18. The bayonet is little more than a giant screwdriver that attachs to the rifle. I guess the soviets thought they could repair their tanks with it or something. The accuracy on mine isn't bad and the kick is similar to a 308. This has to be the ugliest gun I own but I love it. The barrel has machine gouges all over it, the wood finish is partial and look like it was done in a hurry, and the safety is rather difficult to put on and take off. The price is right though, have fun.

Those bayonets were very common of that era and pretty effective. It does look as though it could be used as a screw driver though, never thought of that :)

Good deals to be had like yours if you have a C&R License

C&R (Curios and Relics) allows you to collect firearms that the BATF decrees to be "curios and relics". A lot of good online deals for Mosin Nagants, SKS, Enfields, Krags and other military weapons.

A C&R is a Class 3 FFL (Federal Firearms License) but it does not allow you to purchase and re-sell firearms as a business. It is a "collector's" license.

Most on-line gun accessory stores (Midway for example) will give you a "dealer" discount if they have a copy of your C&R on file.

All this for the princely sum of $30.00. The license is good for 3 years.

C&R also allows you to order eligible firearms on line and have the friendly UPS man bring them directly to your door.

Downside is that it will be the most expensive $30.00 you will ever spend!

As I have in the past, I will also endorse the C&R license. I have one. He's not lying, it's the most expensive $30 you'll ever spend :)
