You heard it. The why do you want to ba an SNA thread is starting to get them, so how about a new topic?

I'll go first... rrr, third.

One of the serious problems in planning the fight against American doctrine, is that the Americans do not read their manuals, nor do they feel any obligation to follow their doctrine...

Good call. I was about to start one myself

More than anything else the sensation is one of perfect peace mingled with an excitement that strains every nerve to the utmost, if you can conceive of such a combination. -Wilbur Wright

And another not so motivational from the movie Fletch:
Alan Stanwyck: Do you own rubber gloves?
Fletch: I rent 'em. I have a lease with an option to buy.

keep on keepin on

Look at where you want to be 10 years from now. Then look at what you are going to or thinking of doing and see if it will help or hinder you from being there.

Thanks, ENSsquid! That means you need to fly more. :)

“This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish selfish clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work, the more I live. I rejoice in life for it's own sake. Life is no "brief candle" to me. It is sort of a splendid torch which I have a hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it over to future generations.” -- George Bernard Shaw

Not all motivational but they are all quotes I really like.

"Cowards die many times before their deaths; The valiant never taste of death but once"

"The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams"

"Never give in--never, never, never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." -- Winston Churchill

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself."
-- John Stewart Mill

"You reach one goal and you cant help but shoot for another.... you push yourself to the limits only to realize that you don't have any"
- Capt. Jim Lussier, United States Army

"It wont be that bad... they'll name bridges after us..."

"Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man's character, give him power."

"The task of leadership is not to put greatness into humanity, but to elicit it, for the greatness is already there"

"The more you sweat in peace, the less you bleed in war."

"What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal."

"...We in it shall be remember'd, we few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother..."

"Tell them of us and say,
For their tomorrow,
We gave our today."

"The greatest use of life is to spend it for something that will outlast it."

"My dedication to my countrys flag rests on my ardent belief in this noblest of causes, equality for all. If my future rests under this earth rather than upon it, I fear not."
- Leopold Karpeles

"Honor those who, daring to die, survived..."

"Together, as Brothers:
We've laughed and cried.
Together, as Brothers:
We fought side by side.
These two different worlds
From which we came,
But in our hearts
We were one and the same.
This place this creed
That we live by,
I never would have dreamed
That you would ever die.
To those who remember
You were a man among men.
To me you were more
You were my best friend.

Someday, somewhere
We will meet again,
Because we will always be
... Brothers till the end."

"Never believe that a few caring people can't change the world. For, indeed, that's all who ever have."

"Be courteous to all, but intimate with few, and let those few be well tried before you give them your confidence. True friendship is a plant of slow grow, and must undergo and withstand the shocks of adversity before it is entitled to the appellation."

"I slept and dreamed that life was beauty. I awoke -- and found that life was duty."

"Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great."

For those of you who haven't read Sen John McCain's first book, here's an excerpt...

"Mike was a Navy bombardier-navigator who had been shot down in 1967, about six months before I arrived. He had grown up near Selma, Alabama. His family was poor. He had not worn shoes until he was thirteen years old. Character was their wealth. They were good, righteous people, and they raised Mike to be hardworking and loyal. He was seventeen when he enlisted in the Navy. As a young sailor, he showed promise as a leader and impressed his superiors enough to be offered a commission.
"What packages we were allowed to receive from our families often contained handkerchiefs, scarves, and other clothing items. Mike had been taking little scraps of red and white cloth, and with a needle he had fashioned from a piece of bamboo he laboriously sewed an American flag onto the inside of his blue prisoner’s shirt. Every afternoon, before we ate our soup, we would hang Mike’s flag on the wall of our cell and together recite the Pledge of Allegiance. No other event of the day had as much meaning to us.
"The guards discovered Mike’s flag one afternoon during a routine inspection and confiscated it. They returned that evening and took Mike outside. For our benefit as much as Mike’s, they beat him severely, just outside our cell, puncturing his eardrum and breaking several of his ribs. When they had finished, they dragged him bleeding and nearly senseless back into our cell, and we helped him crawl to his place on the sleeping platform. After things quieted down, we all lay down to go to sleep. Before drifting off, I happened to look toward a corner of the room, where one of the four naked light bulbs that were always illuminated in the cell cast a dim light on Mike Christian. He had crawled there quietly when he thought the rest of us were sleeping. With his eyes nearly swollen shut from the beating, he had quietly picked up his needle and thread and began sewing a new flag.
"I witnessed many acts of heroism in prison, but none braver than that. As I watched him, I felt a surge of pride at serving with him, and an equal measure of humility for lacking that extra ration of courage that distinguished Mike from other men."

A little W.Churchill to go along with that... part of probably one of the most famous speaches of all time.

"What General Weygand called the Battle of France is over. I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin. Upon this battle depends the survival of Christian civilization. Upon it depends our own British life and the long continuity of our institutions and our Empire. The whole fury and might of the enemy must very soon be turned upon us. Hitler knows he will have to break us in this island or lose the war.
"If we can stand up to him all Europe may be free and the life of the world may move forward into broad, sunlit uplands; but if we fail then the whole world, including the United States, and all we have known and cared for, will sink into the abyss of the new dark age, made more sinister and perhaps more prolonged by the lights of a perverted science. Let us therefore address ourselves to our duty, so bear ourselves that if the British Commonwealth and Empire lasts for a thousand years, men will say 'This was their finest hour.'"

Though much is taken, much abides; and though
We are not now that strength which in old days
Moved earth and heaven, that which we are, we are;
One equal temper of heroic hearts,
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will
To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield.

-Alfred Lord Tennyson

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth
Then took the other as just as fair
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear
Though as for that, the passing there
Had worn them really about the same
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet, knowing how way leads onto way
I doubted if I should ever come back
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence
Two roads diverged in a wood
And I took the one less traveled by
And that has made all the difference

-Robert Frost

Of every 100 men (in battle) 10 Shouldn't even be there, 80 are nothing but mere targets,
9 are real fighters ... we are lucky to have them ... they the battle make.
- Ah, but the one, one of them is a WARRIOR ... and he will bring the others back.

Good Quotes all!

These are the quotes that I live my life by:

These are my motivation quotes attributed to G.S. Patton, Jr.:

"Wars may be fought with weapons, but they are won by men. It is the spirit of the men who follow and of the man who leads that gains the victory."

"Enthusiasm finds the opportunities, and energy makes the most of them."

"Never tell people how to do things. Tell them what to do and they will surprise you with their ingenuity."

"Take calculated risks. That is quite different from being rash."

And my other motivational quotes:

"Make the best use of what is in your power, and take the rest as it happens."
Epictetus (55 AD - 135 AD)

"When you play, play hard; when you work, don't play at all."
Theodore Roosevelt (1858 - 1919)

"We stand for freedom. That is our conviction for ourselves; that is our only commitment to others."
John F. Kennedy (1917 - 1963)

"Fight to fly. Fly to fight. Fight to win."
Anon.

And my nonmotivational favorite Patton quotes:

"Dear SHAEF: I have just p*ssed in the Rhine. For God's sake, send some gasoline."

"Don't be a fool and die for your country. Let the other sonofa***** die for his."

Here be the words I live by. Introduced to me by my father, I have read it many times. It's always made me think. Take from it what you will, I find it powerful beyond comprehension:

------

Desiderata

Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence. As far as possible, without surrender, be on good terms with all persons. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story. Avoid loud and aggressive persons; they are vexatious to the spirit. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Keep interested in your own career, however humble; it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Exercise caution in your business affairs, for the world is full of trickery. But let this not blind you to what virtue there is; many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism. Be yourself. Especially do not feign affection. Neither be cynical about love; for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment, it is as perennial as the grass. Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings. Many fears are born of fatigue and lonliness. Beyond a wholsome discipline, be gentle with yourself. You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy.

Invictus

OUT of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

-William Ernest Henley

"It is the soldier, not the reporter who has given us the freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, who has given us the freedom of speech. It is the soldier, not the campus organizer, who gives us the freedom to demonstrate. It is the soldier who salutes the flag, who serves beneath the flag, and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who allows the protester to burn the flag."
