I hope they give something, because they make you start paying loans after you've been out for 6 months. Unless being in the military is accepted as continuing education, in which case we at least won't have to start paying right away. Yeah, I need some enlightenment too...

In Marine OCS, once you complete it (or the first half if you're PLC) you can start receiving tuition assistance (of course you have to apply for it and it takes forever and a day for it to "kick in"). I believe that once you've joined the military you can apply for extensions (so you don't have to pay right away). You may already have to be commissioned to do this though, I'm not sure. I had a friend at TBS that extended his loan repayment date by one year -- they really tried to work with him. At least talk to your lenders....they'll work with you.

I have searched and searched this subject. I did find something once, but it was a program that had to be entered into when you signed your first papers. Other than that I haven't found anything else about it.

There are no programs that I know of that repay college loans when you graduate OCS. I got a deferal from the federal student loan folks when I sent them a copy of my orders. Some people said it was only for reservist. However, I got the defferment without a problem.

There is the loan repayment program. It's talked about on Navy.com. I think it will pay up to $65,000, not sure how you apply or qualify for it though. Haven't really been able to find anything on it. If anyone finds more info, please post it! I will definitely be needing it!

I'm definetely not sure about this, but for some reason I was thinking that help for college costs is only available if you enlist. That's why there's BDCP for OCS hopefuls. Does anyone know if I'm on the right page?

Hi All,

I'm pretty sure that Navy loan repayment is restricted to the enlisted jobs, or at least that is the last I heard.

You can have part of your federal loans forgiven if you are in a wartime situation though - you'd have to be in Iraq right now though for that to happen, as it only applies if you're directly involved.

As far as military deferrment for loans...You get the 6 month grace period and if you're in hazardous duty area you can get deferrment, but not if you're just going through your military training.

I hope that helps!

Once again, talk to your lender. The Marine I'm speaking of wasn't serving during wartime (not in an active roll anyway) and they deferred him for a year. If I remember correctly he only needed to fax them orders showing he was on active duty. Most want to work with you, it makes it easier on themselves and shows good PR.
