I've never been a big fan of Navy Relief. They turned down help for a couple of my sailors when PSD Horked up their paychecks for a couple of months. Said they "weren't in need, they just had PSD problems." They seemed to believe, and I agreed, that if you can't pay your bills, you are in need.
For something that has an impact today, check out Soldier's Angels, particularly their "Valour IT" project. Provides laptops with voice recog. software for guys who have lost/lost use of hands.
Also the Injured Marine Semper Fi Fund which helps families of injured Marines get close to their Marine during treatment and any special help for their return home.
Fisher house does the same thing - they are kind of like Ronald McDonald house without the red hair.

this program flies veterans for free out to DC to see their respective monuments. Right now I am trying to send my grandfather (WWII vet) out there and also trying to get folks in my organization together through fund raisers to sponsor a flight (40+ folks for 10K).

Every year the military holds the "Combined Federal Campaign Fund". This lets you donate to any of many many many orgs approved by the gov. However, be warned that not all of your money goes here as the overall org takes a significant portion of your donation as overhead. BUT, if you go this way, it's a better (i think) tax write-off.

DAV is a good group that actually hires DAV's whenever then can.
There are also various associations for homeless veterans - I work just down the street from the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans. In speaking with them, I've found out that a lot of them (not all, but a lot) weren't drug addicts or anything like that - in the words of one of them, "I was doing fine for 25 years, and one morning I woke up and just couldn't deal any more."
