Medical Question

I use to have a condition known as IBS (irritable bowel syndrome). Would my history of this problem disqualify me for enlistment. And if so is it waiverable?
Would a letter from my doctor help? Or since it is not a problem anymore should I just check no on the waiver form? Does the military review your complete medical history? If I check no on the medical form, how would they find out? PLEASE HELP!

Thanks, jonny:icon_mi_1

One: I hope this isn't a joke,

Two: I know a guy who was NPQ'd from the Academy for the unrestricted line because he had chronic Diarrhea, so yeah, the Navy looks at this stuff.

NPQ - Not Physically Qualified.

If you don't have it anymore, it may not be an issue. General rule of thumb, if you don't think it's gonna be a problem, don't volunteer the information. There have been cases where someone said, "Well, I had hay fever when I was nine," and then they have to get their cranium X-rayed.

That could be bad on a long flight...

Similar topics have been hit on before (maybe not IBS). If you make a conscious decision to omit information on a medical screening form, it is a fraudulent enlistment. If for any strange reason someone finds out, you will be prosecuted under the UCMJ. Not to mention violating the whole core values thingy that we go by in the military. Better to ask someone first and find out if it is even disqulifying. Don't take no for the first answer, get a second opinion.
Good Luck.

...Not to mention during swim qual.

Don't mean to poke fun, but these days, I take my humor where I can get it.

On a serious note, my cousin wound up being NPQ'd from any military service, due to Crohn's (sp?) Disease. It was a pretty devastating time for him, as he had planned to make the USAF his career, but he pressed on and overcame. Is IBS a less/more serious version of this affliction, or is it totally unrelated?

I think Chrohn's is much more serious. We had an NFO lose his flight status because of it.

No, it will not DQ you for enlistment (or commission). Yes it is waiverable. A letter may help. As others have said, don't lie on your entrance forms.

I've been through the entire SNA selection process. I graduated from Marine OCS, and have been to NAMI for my flight physical. I commission this spring.
