I don't know if I'd call a divert a "highly unusual" maneuver. I've diverted a few times and had a couple other flights where for one reason or another, we were going over our divert plan. Rather the divert than the botched landing attempt... at least this way the aircrew keeps the number of takeoffs and landings equal.
