Living situation in Milton?

I was told by Capt. Opry today that they are no longer making SNAs live in the Q at Whiting. I am about to select my primary location in API and was wondering what the current living situation is up in the Milton area from someone currently living there. Is housing readily available in the wake of Ivan and if so, where are the good places to live?

I don't care about living close to Pensacola, I want to live as close as possible to Whiting, should I choose to go there over Corpus.

I don't know. But, if you can live off-base at Whiting, get some buds, RENT A HOUSE. Living in a house is always a better quality of life than apartments.

I heard that Milton is a bad area to live in? Good gouge or bum scoop?

Depends what you are looking for. I lived there (pre-hurricane) and my only beef was that there wasn't much to do out there. P'cola was a good 30 minute ride from the house and the resturant selection in Milton is a little scant. Milton was a quite place to live close to work, and all in all I'm glad we chose it over living in Pensacola.

Edit: oh, but for my wife and I ... we like Corpus better.

If you're serious about studying, you can't beat Milton. As mentioned above, there's not a lot to do right in Milton. Blackwater State Park is East of Town, there's an 8.5 mile bike trail in Milton and a Movie theater just West of Milton in Pace. Whiting MWR runs a water park on the Blackwater River. Fishing boats and a few "ski" boats at reasonable prices. Otherwise, you'll be going to Pensi for action. I lived on base in Pensacola until my wife got here last Spring, and the drive to fun from there wasn't a whole lot shorter. I commuted from Milton to API. It was about 40 minutes each way (pre-hurricane) but once I got into Primary, it was a blessing, especially on those numerous 0530 brief or simulator days. A good friend of mine lived in Governor's Gate North of Pensi throughout API and most of Primary. He recently moved into a house in Milton. He loves the shorter drive. That's a quick overview, PM me with other questions.

Living in P'cola and commuting to Milton isn't bad at all. Expect about 30-45 minutes driving in on 10 or 90. 0530 briefs are kind of a pain but the drive in gives you an oppourtunity to practice them out loud. With BAH and a crappy house you'll still pocket a descent amount of dough too.
