+1 on the 9G. Make sure you get the one with the actual clip, and not velcro. If you go to something with an ejection seat, the velco has a tendency to come undone when the G suit inflates. Here's a tip, when you get it adjusted just right, have the PR's run a stitch across the strap to keep it from readjusting on it's own.

Another +1 on the 9G... Two reasons I like it over the issued POS.:

1. Its not klunky and big and such.
2. I can put my brains on it.

To add to what SingleSeat said about the 9G... I put a bit of the stiff claspy side of velcro on the bottom so it sticks to the velcro on my g-suit... and doesn't get all shifty in the plane.

I haven't seen any "issue" kneeboards (i never got one) at advanced for jets. I have seen about a million 9G or similiar models. They are pretty easy to customize. I used it in Primary, too, and it works well. Mix it with an IFR strap and you should be good to go for a long while.

I've seen some guys go issued kneeboard on one knee, and 9G on the other knee (in place of a dedicated kneeboard strap). Seems a bit pricey, but it is nice being able to put your jet log on the clip, and have a few DOT approaches photocopied in blue-brain pages, in addition to being able to strap on a chart or approach plate. The issued kneeboard light also comes in handy on occasion.

Isn't that kind of a lot of extra crap to be hauling around?

I see people pputting the single pages in their blue-brains, then putting the page on their 9G.

Just get yourself a nice little kneeboard that looks/feels comfortable to you. In the end, it's just a little clipboard with a strap on it...nothing magic. And as far as blue brains...I don't think I've flown with those strapped to my leg since the VTs. Yeah, we have em and use em, but the cockpit is pretty big, and the guy who isn't flying is there to do the reading for you. Big picture is that unless you end up in a single seat jet, cockpit CRM is gonna change a whole lot once you get to the fleet and the other guy in the cockpit is there to help you now. And the light on the issue kneeboard is a piece. Get a lip or finger light.

I'm no seasoned aviator, but out of the kneeboards I've tried out, I liked this one the best http://www.flyboys.com/kneebwiteycl.html.

Its a very simple and sturdy kneeboard that holds pens, charts, and pretty much everything else, without being oversized. It has eyelets to accomodate various sized laminated covers that can be used for approach charts and everything else, or checklists. I like it mostly because it is very versatile. You can set it up to be a simple notepad type kneeboard with a checklist or two for easy VFR flying, or set it up to hold 30 charts, a festival of pens and whatever else you need. I have a couple friends that compete in aerobatic aircraft and they recommend it because it is very secure.

It is fairly priced, but if you order it make sure and order along with it any laminated checklist/chart covers you may need and the rings. They also embroider it for free with your name and wings if you've got em.

I have a Cencal I think, that I got during IFS. The thing I love about it is that it has a clear page that you can pretty much put a 2-sided sheet in to flip up when needed, or down and out of the way. I think it was about $40 and I found it on the internet, but since I still haven't been given an issue kneeboard, it's good I got one. I do highly recommend the clear plastic page though, a strap is great while you're in primary or if you're single seat, but being in helos I haven't touched mine since as you're always passing the approach plates back and forth.

CAS or FAC(A), a lot of guys use two kneeboards. One with 1:50 chart and a grease pencil, the other with a 9-line card and admin shizznit.

Obviously more of a fleet thing, but it is done... I've tried to avoid it, but I can see the value
