Has anyone been through an interservice transfer or putting their package in now? Thanks for the any info.

Same here, I'm active AF now and waiting for my OCS date.

Are you already a commissioned officer? If so the procedure is vastly different. Of course there is no OCS. You have to work personally with BUPERS to find a designator that approximates your current specialty or get training for soemthing else guaranteed. The local recruiters aren't into interservice transfers for commissioned officers. If you find a friendly Officer Programs recruiting office they will help you with some manuals, phone numbers and other documents. Expect no other help. It is tough to do.

Is it possible to be commissioned in another service and then switch to Navy and enter flight training? For example, if I am an officer but not pilot in the Air National Guard, could I go Navy and enter pilot training? If so, what type of maximum age requirements are there?

It is possible in the sense that there are no regs prohibiting it. I have never heard of it happening. Like I said, it takes personal contact with folks in BUPERS and a lot of hard work just to get a package in. Just finding the right guy to talk to is going to be an all day chore, if you are lucky. I would expect the max age would be the same as for lateral transfer guys from the fleet. Is that 29? Anybody...Bueller?

It can be done. I've done it, AF non-aviation to SNA. It is a long cumbersome process but it is worth it. I am not sure about the age limit. Start w/ MILPERSMAN 1300-080 and PM me w/ specific question if you need additional help.

I have heard of a few stories of people who were commissioned directly in to the USNR and then going temporary active to change designator to SNA. For example, these people were directly commissioned by USNR or were hired by a USNR flying unit into a particular job, fulfilled their obligations, and then went active to become Naval aviators. Has anyone else heard of this happening? I guess a lot of things are possible as long as regulations don't specifically forbid it. But like everyone says it is a difficult task at best to complete. Thank you.

I am currently going through the process of an IST right now. I can attest to the fact that it takes anywhere from 8-12 months from start to finish. I am a non-aviation specialty active Army Officer vying for a shot at SNA. However, I turn 30 next month, so I will probably need an age waiver. The age limit is 31 for SNFO, so I am good there. I should find out for sure within a week or so. Nevertheless, by definition, interservice transfers involve already commissioned officers switching services, and they are quite possible. Each service has its own regulation governing the switch. The common denominator among them is that you must first get released from the parent service, and then get picked up by the gaining service (this is where I am right now). Check out SECNAVINST 1000.7D (Navy), USAF Reg 35-39 (Air Force), P1100.73 (Marine Corps), or AR 614-120 (Army) for guidance on what to submit in your packet. Hope this helps.
