I'm in New Orleans... Car is registered in Rhode Island

Hey guys... been a while. In a quite a perdicament.

When I was stuck at OCS I bought a jeep (well really a hayabusa and then traded it for a jeep). Then I got permission to attach to NRD New Orleans while I go to school. Good deal, right? It really is and just another reason I mourn this medical separation.

Anyways, I digress... I either lost or never received the title to the jeep before I left Rhode Island. I did register it, but can't remember if they sent me the new title or not. I left a forwarding address with the mail room, but, let's face it, those med holders aren't going to be worried about all my mail being forwarded.

So what do I do? I checked the dmv site for RI and all it says is to bring in the "lost title" form with $51.50." NOLA isn't exactly a short drive from RI. I can't call them until Monday so was wondering if any of you have knowledge/experience on the matter.

Thanks, guys.

If you financed the vehicle you may not have ever recieved the title and the finance company might have it. They are the ones that really own the the vehicle..

No, I own it outright. I did a personal loan for the amount of the hayasbusa (to avoid having to have full coverage on my suicide machine) and then just did a straight trade. So I have a personal loan, but the title is free and clear.

This happened to me a few months ago while buying my new car in Texas but registering it in Florida and the dealership mailed the title to my Texas street address but in Milton, Florida. The people living at that house signed for the package and then threw it away. Awesome... As it turned out a faxed copy of the form works to get the paperwork started right away. From there you may be able to pay the fee over the phone. I was able to, they sent me the new title the next day, and they had me mail the original paperwork in. It worked out pretty painlessly actually.
