You guys going to OCS should learn something from this story. Those just out of OCS will relate. Back in 1979 I was in my last week of AOCS when Hurricane Fredrick hit. We spent most of the week preparing for the hurricane. I worked in the Regimental building with the poopies. All the staff had gone home to be with their families except of the Chief Drill Instructor. Late into the night, hours into the hurricane, the Master Guns calls one of the candidate officers and tells him to have some one call down to Batt III to look out the window and see how high the tidal surge was. Batt III is now called Batt II, I think. It is right accross the street from the sea wall and about a block down the road from Regiment. So the candidate officer in Regiment tells the officer candidate on Watch to call Batt II with the order. That guy talks to the Watch in Batt III and he tells the candidate officer in charge down there. There were no staff members on board at all. The candidate officer then tells some poor FNG to "go out on the sea wall and see how high the water is!" So the locked up candidate says "yes sir" puts on a rain coat and walks out into a force three hurricane barely 60 yards from the ocean. We almost lost him. He had to climb over trees to get back into the building. When Master Guns heard the report that Candidate schmo had gone out onto the sea wall he hit the overhead. We laughed our asses off. As an aside, off base for miles was without power. We had power all through the hurricane thanks to the USN. Stayed up all night watching Carson (you know, before Leno). We ended up with a 60 foot boat on the sea wall practically on the Batt III lawn. A 200+ foot ship was sitting on the beach about where the new Navy Lodge is now. Some Ensigns in the BOQ thought parking their new vettes under the Navy Bank drive thru was a good idea. It fell on them. Destroyed 4 cars. Like I said before, OCS just isn't like it used to be!!
