How did the Old-timers DO it?

After reading the posts on this site the last few years, I am totally baffled as to how the old-timers ever managed to make it through the Academy, AOCS, AVROC, ROTC, NAVCAD, let alone flight training, without being able to ask questions, via the internet, of those who have been there, like, which finger is the proper one to pick one's nose, or which is the proper hand to wipe one's ass. :icon_help It must have been a real challenge back in the day. :spin_125:

Good question as I don't think I'm an old timer just yet but there was no internet when I started either (1993). What the hell did I do with my time? Meh, don't remember.

I would assume you would find a nice cave... Make your drawings... Then the next guy that comes through understands what is going on... ;)

My initial getting into the Navy went like this.
Me: "Chuck, how do I fly for the Navy" (Chuck is a grumpy retired LCDR)
Chuck: "Go to a recruiter dumbass"
Me: "Ok"

Shockingly, I never read up on the internet or a forum or anything.. I just called the recruiter, got the NRD number, called them, and went up.

I never asked about motivational statements. Just wrote it.

I didn't even know what an ASTB was. I just took it cold. Kind of like how you are supposed to I think.. (it's an aptitude test, not a "did you memorize this" test, right?)

I came to Pensacola in April of '66 as a newly-minted ensign from Newport. At the School of Pre-flight & later at Banana School (BNAO School then, VT-10 now) I always wondered how the OCANs (NFO-equivalent of NAVCADs) made generally better grades than the officer students. About the time we all went to Glynco, one of them told me: they had the gouge on every test in the system in their barracks. They didn't study for the tests: they studied the tests! None of this helped you in the a/c, but in Pre-flight & basic school, academic scores were most everything and generally determined which a/c pipeline you went into for winging. Oh, and in those days the JO BOQ (affectionately known as "Splinterville" - WWII wooden buildings) wasn't even air-conditioned. The Horror!!

Sir, I think your statement (in addition to the supporting ones below it*) is passive-aggressive. If you have a problem with the concept of this website, then why not come out and say it? Instead, it seems like you're guilting the young'uns here out of asking for advice, which is contrary to this website's very existence. No one here is required to contribute in that manner, but I don't understand why you'd get in the way of anyone else.

Abstractly, there is a new tool on the market that allows business X to compete more effectively in an increasingly competitive market. Is business X wise to ignore it because they didn't use it a decade (or five) ago?

*That's why I didn't send a PM.

I was so in the dark, I stupidly checked into AOCS Indoc. two fricken days early! Big-time dumb! :icon_cryi

But as an AVROC, I didn't make that same mistake again in my second summer! (ie, 5 minutes to midnight!) :D

Passive-aggressive? Maybe. Do I have a problem with the website? Absolutely not. It's a GREAT website. It would have been nice to have this kind of info back in the day. My point is: I just feel too many here are looking to be spoon-fed vice using their own God-given talents to research, investigate, and LEARN! Do I think people should ignore this resource and go back to doing it the way they did "a decade (or five) ago?" NO. Just THINK a little before posting some of the (what seem to me) ridiculous questions I often read. Just the fact that I am explaining this..................never mind.
