Housing Near MCAS Cherry Point

I was wondering if the folks who live or have lived in the area could recommend some towns or specific neighborhoods I might want to consider. I realize that there aren't many areas to choose from. I'm looking for a nice 3/2 from 160,000 to 200,000. I'd like to be within a 40 min max drive to work. Also any insight into the pro's and cons of Newport vs. Morehead for example. Thanks.

Since the local builders have completely overbuilt the area with new construction, you have a LOT to choose from. If you want to live closer towards the beach (without living actually on or near it), then Morehead and Newport are fine, I guess. But if you're looking for more bang for your buck, consider some of the neighborhoods between the base and New Bern. There are several brand new developments that have a New Bern zip code, but only pay county taxes. My neighborhood (Lynwood Highlands) falls into that category. Actually, it might be a good choice to consider, as the smaller houses are smack the in the middle of your price range. The larger houses like mine (thanks, wife, for your well-paying job) start around $230k.

What kind of square footage are you looking for?

I like fishing and the beach but I also want good value. Your idea about between the base and New Bern sounds like a good option. I don't need a whole lot of space because right now it's just me and my wife. I plan to stay in the house for as long as I can so rug rats are inevitable. I would say 1500 sq. ft. and above. Thanks for the input.

I think you'll find there are many homes in the Morehead City area available that will meet your criteria. Now is a good time to be a buyer!

You could do a quick mls search for an idea what is out there.

Gaijin, what does your wife do? My fiance works in finance in NYC and I have been curious too see what kind of jobs, if any, exist in that area of NC. Does Wilmington have anything along those lines? I really dont know too much about that part of NC.

My wife is a Pharmacist, a profession which is in very high demand around here. When I first moved here (we hadn't gotten married yet), but various companies were falling over themselves to hire her. I also remember reading that Eastern NC had the largest shortage of pharmacists in the country, but I can't quite remember where that was. Regardless, it's a job that is somewhat more resistant to the current times, though not totally immune, as her previous position aboard the air station was downsized by the contractor. So she went to work at Wal Mart, for about $30k more a year.

I know a few guys whose wives are teachers, but they seem to have trouble finding jobs lately. Maybe there are experience/licensing/other issues that I'm not aware of that are giving them trouble, but it seems like I hear of a new round of educational budget cuts here in NC.

Edit: Finance might be a difficult sell around here, unfortunately. There's probably nothing or next to nothing right at hand, but it's not really a circle that I'm familiar with. Greenville, Kinston, or Wilmington would likely be the closest places where I could imagine that something in the finance realm would be available. Each one is at least an hour away, with Greenville being about a 1.5, and Wilmington being just shy of 2.0.
