Alright.

SOMEBODY around here probably knows about computers. Me - I can turn the things on, play video games, and come up with inane posts on Airwarriors. Anyway, I am learning that certain unscrupulous, annoying, inveterate, irascible, vexatious, and DEAD (if I find 'em) individuals out there have found ways of making my computer do things that I don't want it to do.

For example: every couple of minutes my browser opens up a new window with some jackass website advertising something or other. Anything from cameras to computer hardware to software to porn to god-knows-what-else. This is beyond aggrivating. This is making me near-homicidal. I don't know how it got there, but could someone PLEASE tell me how to get rid of it? (Or at least where to go to find out how to get rid of it).

Many relieved thanks in advance. HELP!

Do a search on Yahoo! or your favorite search engine for browser highjackers and you can download a free program that should cut back if not stop those annoying things. Not sure which is best ask Jollyroger (my b/f) he fixed mine when I was having the same problems.

Do you have some sort of anti-virus program like Norton? You can download free versions that will help block intruders and pop ups. YOu have to be careful bc many of those ads have spyware and adware. OUr last computer was overwhelmed with all that crap and we ended up having to buy a new one. I now have Nortons internet security which has a pop up blocker, fire wall etc. Runs about $50 a year but has everything and well worth it

try ad-aware.. as well as your favorite flavor of anti-virus. if you ever click 'yes' to anything (or click OK for that matter), you give the thumbs up for whatever website to interract with internet explorer and download WHATEVER it wants, and install it.

the key is: never click yes, and if you on;y have one option (the ok button), hit alt+f4, or hit the escape key. these fvckers are getting sneakier and sneakier.

Ok, one way to stop some of them is this.

Go to your control panel and select administrative tools.

In the administrative tools select services.

In services there is a messanger service. It is in no way affecting msn messanger.

Select the messanger service and disable it.

This can be enabled at any time should you decide you want it later. The only thing it will affect is remote sharing. You will not be able to receive remote desktop assistance w/ this service disabled. It will however block many of those annoying grey boxes that pop up from the internet.

Good GOD, I hated those freaking messenger popups more than ANYTHING else. Those usually come up on brand new comps that haven't disabled messenger. Absolutely sucks, I was getting one every 15 min at some point, and it also interrupts whatever you're doing.
