What kind of weapons training occurs during Navy OCS/API/SERE?

What kind of weapons do pilots and NFO's take on missions? Are pilots/NFO's allowed to bring their own weapons, or do they have to be issued by the Navy?

If this question violates OPSEC, please disregard and list the weapons that you'd LIKE to have when flying missions <asking for trouble>...

Along the same line, can I carry my 45 in combat or do I have to carry an issue? I read in Iron Claw that they were issued Rugers and the thought of that makes me shiver.

All I need is a big Rambo knife. Yeah, a fancy camouflage one w/ compass and fishing string. Don't laugh because I know every one of you guys had one in middle school.

Actually I found one of those things when I was on a camping trip at Lake Georgetown way back in scouts. As for middle school, I believe that was spent playing Top Gun on the Nintendo, and I mean the 1st version of Nintendo!

I'm gonna have to go to my parents house and see if that thing still works and see if I can find that game. Wonder if I can find that game emulated for the PC somewhere. It's been YEARS, but I wonder if landing and refueling is still that hard, or if it was b/c I was so young......

Landing sucked because the game was a POS. Now castlevania on the otherhand, that was a game!

Airgreg,

I am almost positive that the Navy will issue you your sidearm. Before you fly your mission you will check it out from the ship's armory. I know the Air Force uses beretta 9mm. The Navy probably uses them too, but I saw some pilots carry HK 45's on a special on CNN. Personally I would like to carry my Glock 23 .40, but I don't think the Navy will give me that option.

Sorry, due to recent security measures guns, pocket knives, letter openers are not allowed on planes anylonger. [:p]

Generally speaking, pilots get Sigsauers (sp?). You get 4 pounds in your vest, so technically you could put your own in there, but part of the catch is that you are only supposed to use Navy ammo, and that pretty much means 9mm. Personally, I can't imagine carrying my .45 in my vest. I don't think I'd be able to walk. The new vests are heavier than the old SV-2's (despite what anyone says), plus if you have the new PRC-129's...that's even more weight. Also, control of the weapon when not in use would be another issue. Just my $.02.

aviatormo, thanks for the info. i've heard they use the beretta 9 also.

thanks gatordev, appreciate the info. Would that be the Sig Sauer P226 or 228 by any chance?

Anyone know what the Navy (not spec war) shoots during training? Would a Navy officer ever shoot a rifle?
