Good Bad and the Ugly of VT 4 and 10

I thought I would start a thread for those of you in NFO Primary to express your thoughts about the two squadrons. Any good stories out there?

VT-10 had to cut back on flights toward the end of FY05 because they had blown all their money flying on weekends.

About a month ago VT-4 played some "shenanigans" (the cheeky and fun kind) on VT-10 that were halted once it was realized that the studs at VT-10 weren't imaginative enough to retailiate.

Captain's Cup is pretty important to VT-4 and you'll be snived for games if you are on a team.

VT-10 has more instructors so almost every VT-4 student has been rolled back at one point or another. The VT-10 studs I classed up with are all in T-1s while I'm still in T-6s.

VT-4 does 12 hour SDO watches... -10 does 8 hour.

Other than that, it changes one month to the next...

-10's has 10 Attrites this year. -4's had 3. Also, no real "Hammer" in -4.

Does that include the "real" VT-4 ??? Or do you just want the present day incarnation ???

Well, VT-10 did make our production goals for this FY, unlike some other squadron I am thinking of.
The last "shenanigans" I heard of was someone sneaking into the ready room last week to turn the pictures of various planes upside-down. Good one...
Oh yeah, and we have a DVD player for the TV, plus the squadron in general doesn't look like Dresden after a fly-by by the RAF. No exposed wiring, dangling tiles, leaking water, etc.
But in the end, does it really matter? It's not like anyone's going to come ask you which squadron you want for Primary. And the end result is the same...

I was a VT-10 guy in 04. When I went through, it was generally considered that VT-10 wasn't harder just had more jerk instructors. I can testify to that. Also, morale seemed to be higher in VT-4. Guys generally had fun flying while the guys in VT-10 were doing a rain dance outside to get the sigmet in Texas to magically appear over mobile. As for production goals, who cares? That's way above your pay grade. You just worry about yourself and the dudes in your class and you will be fine. Oh, and if you are a VT-10 dude, get ready for standby...lotsa lotsa standby. My advice? Go hide in Griffith and work on your VNAV charts. If you hang out in the ready room, you're liable to make a geedunk run which sucks. Good luck.

The more things change the more the stay the same. Sounds like the squadrons when I went through.... both times :icon_smil.

P.S. When I showed up to VT-4 they had one class left of T-2 guys waiting to qual at the boat. They were so cool......at least they were to us at the time :icon_tong

I have to agree that VT-4 has more morale. We're generally treated more like adults. So what if you roll back a bit or if your buddy P- or I-grads before you? I would rather be in a squadron that is reasonably paced so I can actually learn the stuff than to be in one where I'm being pushed for the sake of production goals. By the way, a VERY RELIABLE SOURCE (guess what that means) told some studs that VT-4 did meet it's production goals unlike a false rumor that's going around. Not that I care about production goals as a stud.

In the end, it's a moot point anyway- it's just a training command. I do, however, count myself lucky to be in VT-4. My two closest friedns here are both VT-10 studs and never seem to run out of bs that they are put through. A good example is that in VT-4 we (and I am only able to speak for my class) are responsible for ensuring that our ATJ's are current and our Class Advisor checks it once a week. It's on us to get it done and we are treated like adults and allowed to do it on our time. My compadres over in the Den have scheduled meetings where they sit down and go page for page over the ATJ.
Don't get me wrong, some things require regimentation. But it's important not to micro-manage.

Oh yeah, did I mention that we don't have any Hammers?

Some of this is nitpicking... it's not like we're comparing Chair Force training to Navy. THOSE guys are the ones who aren't treated like adults...

Plus, like I said, this changes all the time depending on who is STUCON or who the CO is. I was in VT-10 and we never did any of that BS about going through ATJs in the den... just a phase somebody's going through now I guess.

Generally, the gouge has always been that -10 is more anal than -4, but -10 studs are better prepared when they make it to -86. Personally, I think it's all hogwash... everything's what you make of it. If you work hard and stay ahead of the power curve, you'll find you're having a lot more fun than if you don't.

Totally agree, everything comes in phases. Realistically speaking I just try to take care of my focus and do what I can to help my classmates. Everything else is gravy. As tough as things can seem at times, I'm having a blast!

I didn't CQ @ VT-4 ..... the historic basic jet CQ squadron. As a result, my first (and only) training command CQ was in the TA-4 at Advanced in Texas. Any guesses as to why??? Circa 1970???

Hint: it had nothing to do with my personal shortcomings ..... :) .... or .....maybe it did, but who really cares besides me and my Mother ??? Just some TRACOM history .... that's all.

What he said. I was in VT-4 about the same time, and we actually had fun with our flights and instructors. If you wandered down the hall to VT-10's ready room, you'd find absolutely no smiles anywhere...
