Yes they are.

Officers and enlisted service members can recieve the GI Bill. However, you can only get it once. ie you were enlisted and got the gi bill and then used it to go to school then become an officer you would not be able to get it a second time. GI Bill is now paying out $800 + dollars a month and is going up to 100o a month in october.

Yes, you can get the GI bill as an Officer, but not if you got it prio as an enlisted guy. One shot deal, I know.

What you been up to Hosehead? Thanx again for all the help and tell Chief Gus I said hi!

You cannot get the GI Bill if you had an ROTC scholarship either. Just FYI.

The GI Bill is an educational benefit program administered by the Dept of Veterans Affairs for those who serve in the military. To keep this simple you contribute $100 a month for one year. When you decide to start drawing your benefits you receive a monthly check from the VA. How much the monthly amount is depends on how many credit hours you are taking and whether or not yu are still on active duty. The GI Bill program is designed to give the veteran monetary assistance for 3 years, assuming that the individual will be going to school full time. As Dave stated the amount the GI Bill is currently paying is a great deal more than what you contributed. Also, as the cost of attendance goes up, so does the GI Bill. There's alot more to this program, so if anyone has any questions about it e-mail me. I worked for the VA as a counselor the whole time I was in college.

Some people, who paid no attention to their briefings as they entered basic, think that all the GI Bill does is take money from you and give the same amount back when you start school, leaving the government to earn interest on everyone's money. I have heard three separate sailors/soldiers say that. I want to squash that idea! The GI Bill is the best deal out there to pay for college. Everyone who can sign up for it ought to.

If you never go back to school you won't get your money back, but to my knowledge it is available to you forever. So if there is any chance you might, take the opportunity. I knew too many guys who kicked themselves later because they wanted the extra beer money and had to get fat loans to pay for school.

If you can deal with having making a little less each month for the first year that you are in, definitely go for it. You get a gret return on your investment. However, you have ten years from the day you leave active duty to use it. IF you do not use it within this period then the government gets your money. This ten year time period can be extended, but only if you serve additionnal time on active duty after you get out.

Thanks for straightening me out Gator. My enthusiasm for the program continues unabated.

As for the Government "earning my interest" I gave up the 1200 and got back close to 20,000 by the time my money ran out after 3 1/2 yeard of school, having taken summer classes the whole time. I was originally slated for 17,500 with the GI Bill and the College Fund but the amount kept getting increased while I was in school, and I only did 2 years in the Army! With that kind of return the Gov' can "earn my interest" anytime!

I was looking over my enlistment paper work last night and found some info conerning enrollment in the GI Bill and thought that it might be of interest to some of you. NAVCRUIT 1500/15, paragraph 7, states that by law each individual will automatically be enrolled in the GI Bill. During the first two weeks of active duty the paper work will be processed and during this time the service person has the option to disenroll. I just wish that I could get the GI Bill a second time

I remember the day that my company was in the classroom to do the GI Bill paperwork. There were 3 guys that didn't want the GI Bill. The CC's pulled them out of their seats and went totally balistic on them. In fact, that was the worst arse chewing I have ever seen in my life. The only thing that's better than the GI Bill is the college fund but I don't think officers qualify for it.
