FY06 STA21 experiences

Hi everyone,
I'm hoping to start thread, similar to the FY05 STA21; where all of us STA21 applicants could share experiences, post statistics on our packages and give each other word of advice. Simply help out each other follow up on the progress and share the "smiles and cries" :)
My package is as follows:
I'm 21 yrs. old AN (AW/SW), July will be 2 yrs in the Navy,
Applying for SNA
SAT 1190
No high school transcripts because of foreign h.s.,
GED with perfect math score
Approximately 70 sem. college credits
GPA 3.25 from community college prior to the Navy (50 credits), average 3.0 GPA for courses taken while in the Navy
ASTB: not received results yet
SNA physical not included because of a message on STA21 website
LOR: sent out request for endorsement to my congressman (thanks FC1), haven't received reply yet, thinking about asking immediate COC (chief) for one
PRT: scheduled for next week
Evals: First 3.8 P, COC is working on 2nd special eval for STA21
Interview boards: not yet scheduled
Strong app. letter
I will try to "break the record" on the PRT, since I think it will also play some role in the selection. Also I'm praying for strong ASTB results and for enough time to finish the package before 1st of July :)
Well, hopefully someone else will also share...
Good luck all

Thanks for starting this thread! This forum has been all too quite for his fiscal year. I suppose everyone got selected last year.

Anyhow, my package demographics are as follow:
Age: 29
Time in service: 11 Years
Designator: FMF (Fleet Marine Force) MTS (Master Training Specialist)
Current Assignment: Instructor at the Naval School Of Health Sciences
Significant Collateral Duties: NEC Enlisted Technical Leader
Program Option: Nurse Corps
Desired Nursing School: Point Loma Nazarene San Diego, CA

SAT: 1250 (Verbal 690 Math 560)
Evaluations: EP, EP, MP, EP, EP
HS GPA: 2.9 (<--Nasty! Hopefully, the board will realize that this was 12 years ago.)
College Credits: 31
College GPA: 3.7
PRT: Good High
Letters of Recommendation: CAPT (Surgeon, Department Head, advisor to the Surgeon General), CDR (Department Head), CDR (Department Head), LT (Div “O”), and CMC
Community Service: Meals on Wheels, Little League Coach, Drunk Drivers of San Diego
Interview Boards: 10’s with very strong write up
CO: Had meeting with him to request endorsement last Thursday (19 May 2005). Interview went OK, but there was less dialogue then I expected. I feel like I could have been a bit more charismatic in my responses. I had a very strong “sample” endorsement that took me several months to compose. Hopefully he will sign my “sample” with few changes.

I think that summarizes my package. I have been working on it for a bout 2 years. I will update when I get my endorsement back.

I think that your package is very competitive, although I’m not sure about current demand for nurse corps officers. However one shipmate from my unit is applying for nurse corps with her package not even close to comparable to yours.
Well as it was said, the board works in mysterious ways …
Good luck

Age 26
TIS: 7 years 6 months
Desig: SW
Current Assignment: MARMC Norfolk (old SIMA)
Duties: ALPO, System Flush Team leader, Phalanx-Enhancement-Project team leader, Career Counselor, Command Financial Specialist
ACT: 48
ASTB: AQR 6, PFAR 7, FOFAR 5, OAR 52
Evals: P(SIMA),P(Frocking SIMA <90days), EP, EP, EP

Got about 21 hours of flight time so far...hope to increase that significantly by the cutoff date.
Interviews: There are only 2 URL officers at MARMC, and one is the CO. And we cant seem to track down an NFO to sit on my outside board.. so this will be pretty interesting to say the least.

FC1CIWSGUY, when my husband applied he went over to the NROTC unit at ODU & they gave him examples of packages that had been accepted & some info on what the board is looking for, he also had a great DivO with a Dad in high places who had many sailors who had been selected for the various Commissioning programs & gave him some sailor's packages who had offered to share. Just some info for you b/c I see you're in that area, I imagine most NROTC units would be willing to share that type of info.

Hey thanks for the advice! I actually just met a FY04 selectee last week through our wives. He is part of the ODU unit, and said he would take my package and pass it around there and get me some helpful hints. Yea my DIVO is a CWO3, and none in my building knows anything about STA 21. The only feedback I got was when I submitted my initial request chit our LCPO said, "the only thing that might hurt you is you last eval...."

just a quick update ... finished my PRT, did really good. 1.5mile in 9:03, hundred something push ups and hunded one sit ups. i'm not really sure if the board puts any weight on PRT scores as long as the applicant passes the minimums ... however i'm sure it will not hurt.
good luck

ahadu,
What message are you talking about when you said you did not include SNA physical results? Do you need to get the pysical done prior to applying? I am out in the middle of the ocean and I can't get my cycloplegic eye refraction done.

Thanks,

Just a couple questions:

I am finalizing my package before dropping it in the mail. What is the general consensus on the additional qualifying documents enclosure? Should I include the citations from my two Navy Commendation Medals and my two Navy Achievement Medals? Also, I have completed over a dozen leadership correspondence courses. Would it be beneficial to include the completion certificates in addition to my SMART transcripts?

Still no letter from the CO. I have been waiting almost 3 weeks, but he was TAD all last week. :(

I just can’t wait until I actually close the envelope and put the package in the mail. That, in and of itself, is an accomplishment. :)

This will be my second year applying. Basically I’m submitting the same package as last year with a few new additions (Community service, Sailor of the Quarter, Calculus). Hopefully the numbers are up this year; only 186 out of 1,031 last year. Well good luck everybody.

cowboy,
Check the STA-21 website. They recommend that you complete the SNA physical to ensure that you are physically qualified, but it is not required. However, after your selection you will be required to pass the physical otherwise your selection will be withdrawn.

Cowboy,
on the sta-21 website is message specificaly stating that medical forms SHOULD NOT be included in package. I also emailed sta21 guys who confirmed it. Well, otherwise i'm also in the middle of the ocean now, with the news that i was administered old and invalid version of ASTB. It seems that i will not have enough time to take and get results from valid ASTB before 1st of July ...!That sucks! I'm thinking about applying for URL instead with hopes of picking up Pilot in college ...
good luck all

Congrats!

Let the waiting begin. By the way, make sure you check www.sta-21.navy.mil upder the "check application status" section to make sure you package was recieved and their is not issues with it. The fellas at the STA21 site are really really helpful in getting your package straight if their are administrative issues.

when i think about it, during my nomination board, two interviewers forgot to include their "job title" on the interview sheet. chairman did, however those two LTs didn't. interview sheets from my command are good2go, so i hope that selection board will not disqualify my package just because of this ...
i didn't have chance to correct them since i saw copy of the final package shortly after it was mailed.
