I was out at the airport today (goofing off) and saw this little plane taxing to the “T” hangars. I was lucky enough to catch the pilot before he closed up the hangar and left. He was very nice, told me all about the plane, and let me take a few pictures.
This is a Piper L4H made in 1944. It was an artillery spotter and this particular one was used in the European theater. The plane crashed in February of 1945, was repaired and returned to action in March. The little airplane stayed in Europe after the war, it was sold to a flight school in Sweden, where it remained until this fellow, and a friend, bought it four years ago and restored it to original condition. The pilot said the restoration was completed only about a month ago. Look at the radio in one of the pictures, that is the original radio in all of its vacuum tube glory.
Look at the size of the thing!
