Fixed wing or Helo?

Once a person has a air contract through PLC and is commissioned, how do you know if you'll fly a fixed wing fighter or a helo, what is the basis of that decision made on? Thanks

Needs of the Marine Corps or Navy, then flight grades. I've known many people with good grades in flight school who just didn't get what they wanted due to the needs of the military.
