Firearms instruction in the JAX/Mayport area

Can anyone recommend courses to take (all levels) in the Jax area? I'm already signed up for a concealed carry class next weekend, but I'm trying to get my wife interested (or at least less frightened of) firearms and was thinking some quality classroom and range instruction could help. I'm also looking to get some range instruction, just for personal improvement. Anyone have a good gun p.o.c. down myah?

I have recently experienced some considerable success getting my wife into shooting. I had a multi-stage plan to get this done, and then executed it to perfection.

Step 1 was to scare the shit out of her....wait, I mean I tried to appeal to the female's natural desire for security. In Memphis, this is pretty easy to do. Just turn on the local news, and you will hear story after story of people getting murdered. Every time the news anchor starts talking about how someone got killed, I would say "SEE HONEY!!! THAT'S WHY I CARRY A GUN!!!"

When there was a home invasion about 2 miles from our house and a murder at a near-by bakery, that pretty much sealed the deal.

Step two was to let her think she was running the show...That consisted of going to gun shops and letting salesmen tell her the exact same shit that I had told her two or three times. It took a week from my bottom lip to heal, but I managed to keep quiet and let her hear things for the 3rd time.

Step three was going to the range...That was the easiest one. By that time she knew what she wanted to test drive, and after going through the Glock, XD, M&P, and Walther PPK, she had made her choice.

Step 5 was going back to the gun shop and making the buy.

So far, she really likes shooting. We have a really nice indoor range close by, and are about to get a membership. She is a really good shot, and it gives her something to practice with and get better at. I even shoot crappy sometimes just to make her think she is doing better than me. Man, that is a great decision. She can't wait to go back to the range and show me up again. We have her on the schedule to take the handgun carry class later this month.

If there is one bit of advice that I would jump up and down on, it is to go easy on her while teaching. Take it down to firearms 101, and don't intimidate her with a bunch of lingo that she does not understand. My wife is a lot more receptive to tips and help from people other than myself. Hey..her maiden name was Holtz, I knew what I was getting into.

Good luck.

Better yet, good luck finding ammo. Tennessee is sold the F out.

PM Pickle. I **think** he said that you don't have to take the class, if you have orders to the state of Florida, you just have to pay the fees. (I'd ask him now, but he just got home from a cancelled flight and he's in a craptastic mood. To whomever spilled fuel/oil/fluid on the tarmac at NAS, you and I need to have a chat... you made my day unhappy...)

He and his buddy, Ken, go to a range in the area. They're really happy with it, and the fees are fairly cheap (i.e. I don't b!tch and moan when he goes shooting).

p.s. If you want to go together sometime, Pickle is trying to get me interested in firearms as well...

Gateway is a good place to shoot over on the westside.

The "per year" and initiation fee is a bit high ($200ish for 1st year, 100 thereafter) but it's a FAMILY membership, and unlimited use for free for the year. So when you break it down on a "per use" basis, it's cheap.

Everything from 7 yard pistol to 200 yard rifle, clays and "action bays".

^^^^ Yeah, go to Gateway. Teh yhave one of the most annoying websites on earth, but it's a great place to shoot anything but .50 BMG. http://www.grpc-jax.com/

They have classes going all the time and their prices are pretty low compared to classes I've seen advertised at local gun shops.

I think it's $12 a day to shoot all day weekday and maybe $2 more on the weekends. If you know you're going to be here for a while, the membership pays for itself pretty quickly.

They have plenty of lines that run independently, too, so you won't always be waiting to go swap targets like at that craptastic outdoor place in Corpus. I'm thinking of building a 500 yd gun, just so I can use that range.
