Hi,

I'm applying to OCS and hopefully I will be selected for the October class of this year. The one thing that worries me is being able to support my family while I'm away. I've heard that the Marines and perhaps all branches in general will give you an allowance every month to help support your dependants.

I'm sure many of you have been in or currently are in my situation. If any of you know any more details, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thank you.

Thank you Hoorah.

Do you know what I need to do in order to receive the Family Separation Allowance?

You can use the BAH for whatever you want. It is paid as part of your bi-monthly check. If I remember correctly, the $250 separation allowance isn't paid until the end of the first month, so plan accordingly.

Yes you will still rate BAH since you have dependents and a home to take care of while gone.

My dependants are my mom and my little brother. Would I still receive the Family Seperation Allowance and BAH?

If you can get them enrolled in DEERS. It is a unique situation, having your mom/brother as dependants, but it can be done. Your best bet is to look into that early, since (typically) spouses/children are dependants.

Call the MCB Quantico base operator (the number I have is 703 784-2121...I hope it is current) and ask to speak with a representative at DEERS.

FSA is paid on the 31st day you are away from your family via unit diary. You'll get it as long as you have at least one dependant in the Total Force System (3270). The same goes for BAH regardless of whom your dependants are so long as they’re in MCTFS. You would be considered a geo-bachelor. The Defense Enrollment Eligibility System (DEERS) is a separate system run by DOD to determine medical and military privileges and issue ID’s. If the MC will let you claim them on a NAVMC 10922 (Depn App), then DEERS will honor it. You’re going to have to prove some type of hardship if claim your mom and brother. MCTFS is the only system that affects pay! I handled pay and entitlements and was a DEERS rep. Let me know if you have any questions.
