Now, before anybody jumps down my throat (bch)I searched the forum and could not find an answer to this question; when one is finished with the Navy, is it within the realm of possibility to go from flying helos to flying for commercial carriers? My reason for wanting to join the Navy is twofold, I believe that if a person is going to live in the US and enjoy the benefits if doing so they should at least put in some time so as to earn that and the second reason is that I would hope (if predicted economic trends pan out)to fly for some commercial airline when my time is up. I've heard that getting helos is more than likely and I have no idea how this would affect hopefully working for an airline.

The big boys (AA, Conti, Southwest, ect.) won't take the helo time towards the qualifications they require for hiring. I have talked to plenty of reservists who got on with one of the big boys after being helo drivers for at least part of their time, so it can be done (probably more accurately it was doable prior to 9/11).

From my uncle who used to fly for US Air Express, he said that some of the regionals will accept it as time towards meeting the qualifications if other fixed wing pre-reqs are met too.

Now, if you haven't started training yet, my advice is don't worry about it, who knows what things will look like in 10 years or so.
