This is a question to all who have taken the ASTB test, especially those who have taken it recently.

I have been a maintainer in the Navy for almost 5 years now, I have some good gouge for the test. I know lots of times the gouge doesn't always match up to the test itself. I was wondering how much, if any, should I put my maintainer mind set and knowledge towards the test while taking it? Is there much relation to the knowledge of a maintainer to the aviation questions or is it opposite?

I am going to be taking the test January 10th. I appreciate the advise in advance.

Well as a prior maintainer and sailor myself I believe you should have more knowledge in the Aviation/Nautical department. However, there are still many questions that can and will be asked which your prior maintenance experience would give zero help. I didn't do too bad on the ASTB (7/8/7 55 after 3 days of studying) but I went with the attitude that my 7-8 years of aviation maintenance and flight experience would provide no help. I studied for EVERY section putting more emphasis on areas I knew I was hurting. I think that would be the way you should handle it as well. Concentrate on the areas you know you need work on and you should do fine. Good Luck!
