Here's the situaton. I need to know how much time free Navy personell get during their time as enlistees. I'm hardcore training for an Ironman Triathlon and don't want to go if I won't have enough time to train. Anyone know what an enlister's time schedule is like??

Thanks bunches

Part of your job will be to maintain a certain level of fitness, but as for "hardcore" training for an ironman tri I seriously doubt an enlisted person would have the time... unless you get a restriced line duty....

You'll get all the time you need. You just go to work and when you finish you train as long as you want until the next duty day. There is a MA1 I know at NAS Sigonella who gets no cost TAD orders to go compete in traithlons all the time. He does his job and trains. They will support you is you are a good athlete and you take it seriously. After all, when you go, you are representing the Navy.

I completely agree that it is possible to do, but to qualify my remarks...

I take "hardcore" training to mean trying to compete for a high finish (top 20 or so) and that will require 5-8 hours per day no matter how much natural talent one has.

Certainly if your goal is to complete and meet certain persoanl goals in an ironman event, then you can do it no matter how long you work.

What is a restricted line duty for an enlisted person? Never heard of that. I agree w/ robv..There are guys in my office that live in the gym when they are not at work. Its definately do-able.

If you are on sea duty it might not be so easy. Even with your free-time, there just is not the space or resources to train. You can easily keep in shape, but real running and swimming are not an option. Plus since we are talking about the Navy, I think you can probably count on sea duty.

Im sure its 1month(30days) of leave for the Navy. Either Navy or Army. My ROTC SAI was talking about that the other day

For god sakes, don't enlist ... you'll end up drinking to much beer, smoking to many cigarettes ... and all the training will go right down the tubes ... LOL

Dude, you can do it. I was enlisted for 4 yrs and i worked from 7 am to 3 pm and whatever you do with your time after that.....well its pretty much up to you!! I was a hard trainer....but unfortunately, the only thing my room mate and i trained was our eyes watching football on the couch all Saturday and Sunday!! lol

On the serious note....i believe you will have the time you need. Good luck and keep in mind and every command is different. I was in a helicopter squadron not a ship (thank god).

Take care and good luck,

Steven

The only thing that kept me from becoming a fat body was surfing ... Ya know the best place to train, is the boat. God, there's more time to kill on that tin can then any other place I've ever been.

I really want to know, if everyone hates the boat so much then why did you join the Navy and not any other service? Is it really that bad?

Cause foriegn woman love Navy men ... And its a good excuse to get away from the wife, girlfriend, bills, phones, traffic, .... good food, clean cloths ... umm, oh, good excuse to get away from privacy, quiet peaceful surroundings, umm... great excuse to go bomb stuff. Let see ... [}:)]

Cause the Navy is the best, we have the best job, best travel, best everything, we fight better, drink better ... and I wouldn't want my life in any other service than the Navy. (Bruce Sprinsten starts playing ...) [8D]

Actually on a bit of a more serious note to your question. For me personally, its the tradition, brother hood, honor and challenge that the Navy offers. I like how different the Navy is that the other services and I like how unique our branch is.

The boat may suck, but I will say that working six months of combat on the flight deck was by far the most awesome experience I have ever in my life be privlaged enough to have. Besides, the boat kind of grows on people after a while, I actually miss it if you could believe that. Being apart of the Airwing, feeling the jets and the vibrations and gutting out the blood and sweat and then seeing a mission come back successful, it was a real life changing event for me after my first jet came back, I knew I was really apart of something.

And when you pull in from a cruise, and you see the thousands of people on the dock waving the flags, banners, and all the love from the entire Navy family. You see the pure excitment of everyone on that ship as your pulling in, you know that you have brother hood that was forged through fire. To me, its worth every single little sacrifice we make.

Those are just a couple small examples from my experiences. But thats why I do it.

Valion310 hit the nail on the head!
It is about honor, courage and commitment! I can not sit here and tell you that the Navy is the best branch of the service, but i can tell you that the Navy is the branch of service that i chose. It is about our military in general. Our country.
I believe it is about the freedom in our country. Yes, we are the one who get separated from family for 6 months and leave our wives and kids ALONE. Yes we are the ones that 70% of our fellow americans do not even think about during Peace time. Think about it, how many people really know that there are always Sailors, soldiers, marines and airmen out in the gulf 24 hrs/7days and their families here in the States waiting for them to return. We are not just normal Americans, we are warriors. We are patriots! We are the ones who give college kids the freedom to go out every weekend and get drunk with their friend and harrass women without fear of going on the streets. We have freedom! But keep in mind, we are also the ones who our own friends look at and tell us..."F&%# that, you go to the service. I am fine where I'm at right now". That is the reason why i say that we are not normal American, we are a special breed! OK, OK......enough! Those are my two cents....

By the way.....my friend always hear this speech! LOL
