Eco-friendly ordinance

Good, I'm tired of those laws that hate on the environment.

Well, thank goodness we are finally getting some eco-friendly ones.....at least that is what I got from the title.

I imagine this is more to protect training ranges, where 100s of these are dropped over time, than real targets. It's a lot like switching away from lead ammo so that rifle ranges don't become Superfund sites.

Squeeze and Flash....well played. Being an EOD guy, that word makes for one of my pet peeves. Although a career disposing of laws does have a certain ring to it...

Seriously though, if they can manufacture explosives with the needed characteristics that have minimal environmental impact, it would simplify a whole bunch of things in the realm of range use and management.

As lmnop pointed if they could manufacture explosives with the desired characteristic it would simplify things. However, I have a feeling any 'environmentally friendly' explosive is going to be extremely low-order and lack a lot of the power of modern explosives. With out the right characteristics, it will be useless.

According to the article, these compounds have roughly equivalent power (I assume in energy per mass) to TNT. There's nothing that says powerful explosives need be toxic chemicals. I wonder if they will need larger fusing though, since they seem to be less sensitive to physical shock. Cost of production will be another interesting factor. I expect if it's wildly expensive, there will be another political fight about cost savings vs. target range environmental protection.

OrdInance vs. Ordnance

Common newbie mistake:

ordinance
noun formal
1 the president issued an ordinance edict, decree, law, injunction, fiat, command, order, rule, ruling, dictum, dictate, directive, mandate.
2 religious ordinances rite, ritual, ceremony, sacrament, observance, service.

ordnance

noun
the disposal of WWI ordnance continues guns, cannon, artillery, weapons, arms, ammunition; munitions, materiel.

Glad I could clear things up!
