I have about 1200 hrs as a navigator on C-130s and I understand that the Marines are flying the J model now. But, will they take this into account when I put in my platform selections in primary? (and yes I do want props)

If you're going to be a Marine NFO you won't be getting props. We select in advanced, either Hornets or Prowlers. And NEEDS OF THE MARINE CORPS primarily dictates what you get. Your history may give you some sort of advantage during training, but won't help you during selection.

This is purely word round the campfire...however, we have had two Marine NFO's who have come back through primary as SNA's since I've been here. Both have wanted to go back to their respective communities and both have. They individually said that there is some preference. That said...see the above.

To clarify for the uninitiated, Marine C-130 navigators are enlisted. The MOS is going away with the J mod.

As is the DASC(A) capability. Unless they buy us a new box with power hookups that are J compatible. But I digress...

Years ago, when I went through primary, Marine C-130's was very competitive. Usually those with the top grades seemed to go that way. In the sims at VT-31, we would have partners and once in a while it would be a Marine C-130 select and he just seemed a step above what we usually had in the sim. Always impressed. Hopefully you get what you want.

To make you all feel better, I personally know a rockstar who pulled a whopping 25 out of Primary fairly recently. Went to the review board, yada yada yada, changed his graduation to a later date, and the pool of scores he was ranked against changed as well. Went from a 25 to a 31, he graduated, and should be winged fairly soon to fly Herc's. Again, if you want Herc's, you'll probably get them.........in true Marine fashion.........trucking around with no guns........you can have it.

Yeah, that's pretty much not true. They're still fairly selective because there just aren't that many spots.

Concur. Herc slots are hard to come by. My FAM partner in HT's had somewhere near a 50 NSS desperately wanted Hercs (he was a C-130 Crewchief), now he's flying CH-53E's. Needs of the Marine Corps and Timing...

Many times, there are no Herc slots, just as there are not always jet slots, so get the "if I want it and get the grades, I'll get it" mentality out of your head as soon as practicable.
