Hey all...Through no fault of anyone in particular, (that I know of anyway), my stroll through primary is getting pretty stretched out. Long story short, I'm wondering if you think a few gaps in training are going to really impact me down the line. I understand there is always rust getting back in the airplane, but what I'm asking is whether this is going to affect me long term? I would also assume that there is going to be an impact grade wise...any suggestions for mitigating this/staying as sharp as possible when out for a while?

Happens to lots of folks, so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Instructors are aware of things like that, but it's always good to discuss your "currency" issues in your brief just to key in your instructor that you may not have flown a lot recently.

Ops should also be scheduling you for warmups if need be; ask for the optional tactfully if you feel you need that, too.

It might depend on how long the gap is. For example, I didn't finish API until 18 months after commissioning. Then 2 years to get wings. Then another 18 months at the FRS after delays. So now, it's time for the O-5 board and I've only got 3 competitive tours (sea/shore/sea) vs others with 4-5 tours. It may or not play a part in selecting, depending on the board of course. Part of that is my fault as some of the delayed guys rolled early to do a disassociated tour. They had goals of being a CO and wanted the best possible record to help them out. So being delayed could have an effect down the road depending on how long it is and how you deal with it. I don't regret my decision to serve my full tours but it might come back and bite me in the end.

Thanks for the input guys...Made two x's last month...one was a mandatory warm-up. Eligible for another here shortly. Like I said...no real fault to go around, just frusterating, especially since I'd like to do as well as possible.

Also, going thru too quick can shoot you as well.

I was a LT for 3 weeks when what was supposed to be my last LT fitrep came up. I ended up being extended 6 months to the next COC, which helps, but it would have been nice to leave on time.

Man, be thankful for every break you can get. All the time off can get annoying after a while, but the pace will get much, much quicker in advanced, so enjoy the time off while you've got it.
