As a Marine aviator, would a degree in Aeronautical Engineering open up any more doors (post grad school selection) or help with flight school more than a degree in a Liberal Arts major such as English or History? I know that's a long, long ways off but selection for my major is in the near future. Thanks!

2.9999999999999999999999999999999999 GPA history major became a marginally succesful fleet aviator.

Dont see test pilot school in my future though. Wont be an MOI either though beacuse of GPA so go study but GPA does not equal success as an aviator good or bad.

BRM21, save yourself the agony. Engineering sucks, so much work and unless you want to be an engineer I'd find another route. I was thinking the same thing as you but now Im into deep to get out. One other crucial thing is the absolute lack of good looking chicks, have yet to see one good looking engineering girl at my school in three years. Take it for whats it worth.

Haha thats damn true. Im a aero engineer dropout and am now in economics and it was the greatest decision Ive made in college. I for one love econ and figured aero eng. was just too much work and not worth the stress. I just needed a diploma and wanted one why studying something I enjoy. Many candidates in my pool are engineering dropouts.

Two years of aerospace before seeing the light and deciding on political science. Best move I ever made, plus I still got an air slot. Honestly, it all comes down to you doing what you like, which in my case did not involve countless hours in the lab and complete lack of social life. Lets not get started on the ratio and looks of the female engineering population... :dog_125:

Another engineering drop-out here. It just isn't worth it. I switched from Mechanical Engineering to Business, best move I ever made.

I am a friggin Sociology major and I got a air contract. Granted I have a 3.8 but I would recommend PoliSci. I would be a Poli Sci major right now but I am already almost done with sociology (I hate it).

Failing Calculus 1 just ended my Aerospace Engineering career before it started. I figured the future was not too bright. Later switched to Communication with a minor in Political Science. Loving everyday of it, I guess more party time.

Opposing viewpoint

I hate to be the only opposing viewpoint on the thread, but I'm going to stick up for Engineers. Engineering isn't that bad. Do you want to have a highly specialized and technical degree like Aeronautical Engineering? When something goes wrong with the plane, do you want to have a better picture of what went wrong? Do you want to design planes, cars, missiles, etc.? Also, where do you want to work once your out of the military? There's no doubt about it-hard work and late nights are synonymous with Engineering, but you can make bank once you're out of the military. Engineering firms look for things like leadership and expertise in highly technical fields like Aero, Mech, EE, Systems, Industrial Distribution, Engineering Technology, etc.

KEEP IN MIND, I'm not dogging the lib arts majors out there. Those guys get out of the military and are able to be successful, too. I'm just being impartial for engineers :icon_wink . Of course, it all depends on what you want to do and what makes you happy.

It doesn't matter what degree you have for flight school, but it does matter what you want to do after the military. I'm not going to mislead you with a statement like 'becoming an engineer will better prepare you for the military.' Something like that is hogwash. I know of officers who have degrees in Recreation, Parks, and Tourism Sciences, English, and Forestry who are top notch and have gone on to do great things.

Needless to say, I have a good time with Engineering and enjoy the prospects of becoming a P.E. (professional engineer) or a Mechanical Engineer in the future. Designing/tinkering/fixing materials and actually learning 'how things work' is what interests me.

AHHH, lets reminisce... statics, dynamics, fluids, strengths, diff EQ's... all the reasons we left engineering for the greener grasses of liberal arts. Economics here, cant go wrong with that. Probably the lowest GPA on AW (as a result of the aforementioned classes) with air contract.

At least minor in something cool that you'll enjoy. For instance I majored in Industrial Technology (somewhat tough) but I minored in slaughtering. Yes that's right Slaughtering. The classes were a little more in depth than I expected, doing research on Hoof and Mouth and Mad Cow disease etc. But the lab was nothing but killin. The facilities were outstanding, very clean. The community (ranchers, 4-H) would bring in livestock, leave us a list of what cuts they want and we'd do all the work for a minimal price to the university. We killed cattle (of course), goats, sheep and hogs. There's actually a lot more that goes into it than I thought. The good part is, the rancher I worked for gave me a steer to fatten up every year and I'd take it to school and kill it myself, age it for 2 weeks, then cut it up myself, vacuum pack it and take it home. It'd last me and the wife 6-10 months.

I bet PETA would love to take a tour of that place...

Good times.

I'm not too worried about meeting other good looking chics or not having a social life...Being at the Naval Academy will make sure none of that happens.
We get up to f*ckin Calculus XXVI no matter what your major is. I love history, eng, and poly sci but if I'm doing that much math and physics I was going to see if it would be worth it to do a just few more engineering classes and get a degree in Mech or Aero engineering. Seems weird getting a B.S. in Poly Sci....or maybe that looks appropriate.

Having a background in engineering will not help you with that - at all. If anything, I've seen it work against guys who tend to "nuke" something simple and try to turn it into something complex. Not knocking engineers, just keeping it real.
