Degree Accreditation

Hey all,

Planning on going to LMU in Munich for my last 2 years of university. It’s a highly recognized university, but my recruiter brought up regional accreditation. Would getting my bachelors from here be bad? Apparently their education standards are higher I heard.

Want to make sure this won’t hurt my OCS package before I pull the trigger

Thanks,

Shane

The school has been around since 1472 so if they haven’t got their act together it might be too late.

Just kidding…should be fine but if you are worried you can pay for a credential service to evaluate your degree. LMU is a great school and the Navy would be lucky to have a graduate from there (although your background investigation paperwork is going to be a job).

I am assuming you are a US citizen.

Probably will be fine, but ask him to have the NRD Educational Specialist look up the school, should take just a few minutes to put your mind at ease.

The other thing is will the school be giving the traditional A, B, etc... for grades? If so no worries, if not ask the school how they can do a conversion to give you some type of GPA. I had this be a hangup with a few applicants.

They have the same letter system but the GPA is backwards. 4.0 in Germany is the worst, 1.0 being high. There are convertor calculators on the internet that seem to satisfy that. That should be sufficient?

The PA for any community does dictate that the degree be accredited, so if your University is not here then it will almost certainly need to be evaluated. I'm not sure why but they simply don't have foreign degrees accredited.
I had my foreign degree accredited, it's a non-issue. I originally had it accredited for the AF, and they specifically required a course-by-course equivalency and a GPA equivalent to be calculated by a NACES member accrediting service. Not sure if the Navy would have the same requirements but I would assume they're similar. In any case it was accepted by the Navy as well without issue.
It certainly should not hurt your chances at all.

4.0 in Germany is the worst
Funny thing is there are plenty of dummies who get a 4.0 from the American system too (ahhh just kidding, sort of).

@exNavyOffRec has solid and actionable advice. Foreign educational credential conversion was a pretty straightforward paperwork drill in the 1990s when I joined, easier than a lot of people realize, and it still is- when the school is like the one in question.
