My grandfather, John Alford, was a Pearl Harbor Survivor. At the time, he was a Storekeeper 3rd Class aboard the U.S.S. California (BB-44).
I had a very close relationship with my grandfather. Growing up, I loved hearing him tell stories from his time in the navy, especially the day of the attack. While in boot camp May 4, 2001, I received word that my grandfather had passed away. It was especially tough for me since I was unable to attend his funeral.
I'll never forget, 3 weeks before he passed away, the smile that was on his face when I told him that I had joined the navy.
The Kitsap Sun Newspaper had been putting together a compilation of accounts from various Pearl Harbor Survivors in the area. They interviewed my grandfather a month before he passed away. Here's the article:
