Hello everyone, I have perused your forum quite a bit and it has been very informative. I am currently enlisted in the Navy. I earned my degree before I joined, so that isn't going to be an issue... I am directly applying to OCS from my current command. I was wondering what your opinion of my package and it's ability to be competative is... here are the stats

Letters of Rec.

-Recently retired O-6 Pilot, former CVN CO
-Current O-6 Pilot, current CVN CO
-High School Teacher
-I am part of a Strike Group and will be talking with the COS, who is an 0-6 NFO, and seeing if he would be willing to write me a letter (he is very supportive of this application so I imagine that this one is good to go as well)

-Assessment Board
0-5 Surface, 0-4 Surface, 0-3 Pilot, 0-3 LDO

-CO Assessment - 0-7 Pilot

Letter of Commendation from my "A" School

I don't have any official PRT data, yet. I was at BUD/s before I was involuntarily disenrolled due to injury and the Navy doesn't accept NSW Screen Tests for PRT data - which makes no sense to me, but it is the Navy... My PRT score will be just fine though.

I am unhappy with my OAR - I took it back in 2003 before I graduated, and I didn't study properly... as far as I am concerned it is not a strong score - so I am going to prepare and study quite a bit and retake it, I have no doubt that I will score much better.

How does this look to you guys? Any pointers? Would it be possible for you to perhaps critique my personal statements?

I am applying for Pilot, NFO, SWO - in that order

ASVAB will not matter. You are on point with retaking the ASTB.

If you have a college degree why not get a college professor instead of a high school teacher? How does this guy help you?

Honestly your ASVAB score does not matter. Your ASTB could be better, but your major concern should be your GPA. Generally a 3.0 is the minimum competitive GPA, therefore you should focus on adding extracurricular bullets such as community service, command involvment, civilian non-profit organizations, experience that sets you apart from other candidates, and an impecably written motivational statement. What is your current rate/rank? How many years do you have in? Have you had any Fit-reps/Evaluations?

Hello, thanks for your input! I am an OS, E-4. I have been in for 16 months. I am involved with my command MWR currently. Any specific recommendations for any certain community work they like to see?

My gpa is what it is because of my first semester of college - I wish I could say that I had a great time partying and therefore at least had fun while earning poor grades, but the sad fact is that I just didn't know how to study and I was in a very difficult course of study (aero engineering at the time) - they actually changed the curriculum after my first semester due to the poor performance of the students across the board. My first semester gpa was a 0.95 - But all of the others after that were much higher, without my first semester in there my gpa is around a 3.1-3.2. Do you think the board will see my marked improvement in gpa after my first semester and take that into consideration?

I have been in 16 months. All of my commands prior to my current were training billets, thus all of my evals are training evals and you can only go up to a max of "3" (out of 5) on those - which is what I scored. My current command eval will be due in april, and as I am very motivated and dependable, they will score very well. Also, sailor of the quarter will be soon, and I hope to be a very serious contender for that.

Do you think my letters of reccomendation will help my case? As in, they are from some fairly high-ranking people, CVN CO's and a one star assessment sheet as well.

The board will review your transcripts therefore if there is a substantial difference in between your freshman and latter years of study, they will note it. It is better to have a horrible year of study and improve in the latter years than to have mediocre grades throughout your college years. Sailor of the quarter is nice to have on your record but your evals and community involvment is what they look at overall. Get involved with soup kitchens, or humanitarian community events. Volunteer for DEFI, things that show your interest in helping others excel. Your letters of recommendation being from high ranking officials is good and that should benefit you, but also get at least one from a direct supervisor (your LCPO, LPO, Division Officer) so that they know that the people that actually SEE you work are happy with you and satisfied with your motivation and work ethic.

Congrats OS3! Great news. How did you get the word? Your CO?

I'm asking because one of my troopers has a package in and BUPERS won't tell me but the CO is on travel for a few days. Of course he's at the Bureau and I'm sure they won't be able to get word to him there. To obvious...
