I can't find a link to the Proceedings article by RADM Porterfield, the outgoing Directotr of Naval Intelligence, so I will post some of his most interesting thoughts and comments.

Total force of naval intel is 7700. Fewer then 3500 are active duty.

46% of active duty intel personnel are afloat. They are mainly on big deck ships like CVNs, LHA and LHDs. Aprox 100 personnel serve with each Carrier Strike Group and 55 with each Eexpeditionary Strike Group. Intel weenies also serve in most all avation squadrons and air wings, ampibious squardons, destroyer squadrons and SEAL teams

29% of intel personnel serve in joint billets. about 25% are in shore duty jobs.

Individual mobilization for reserve intel billets will be over 314 in 2005. 35% of all navy indivdual mobilizations for the war are from the reserve navy intel component. Today nearly 90 active duty intel personnel are in Iraq or Afganistan. 150 reserve intel folks are in CentCom. 28 reserve intel specialists will be mobilized to take over detainee interrogation at Gitmo. There will be 80 full time navy intel guys at Gitmo.

All of the Navy's POW interogation capability is in the reserves.

The Admiral sees the purpose of Naval Intel as "operationalizing intel". That is, integrating intel with operations. The emphasis is on "actionable intelligence", being able to predict the enemies next move and direct offensive action.

Intel officers will need significant info management skills, including in depth knowledge of collection sensors, processing systems, databases, decision aides, and supporting info networks

New program in Special Warfare called Trident will consist of 200 new billets. HumInt billets are going to be increased by 100%. There will be a review and realignment of naval attache manning and intel contribution to the foreign area officer program. A joint project with Justice and Homeland Security will stand up a single Global Maitime Intelligence Integration Center.

There is a new partnership with Naval Post Graduate School to design a course for civ and mil intel personnel that offers an education in the best private sector business practices, innovation, and transformation.

Current heavy demands on naval intel will continure into the future.

RADM Porterfield wrote me an authoritative letter of recommendation for my STA package when he was PACOM J2, so of course I am biased. He was a very impressive 1630 with an amazing breadth of knowledge and insight. He held out for a long time as DNI (longest-serving DNI ever) and I'm sorry to see him go.

Any ideas where I can find info on the Trident program?

The program hasn't been stood up yet, but will be part of ONI, not NSW. You could look there. I have an intel buddy that served in NSW twice while on active duty. I keep meaning to have him join AW and school you pups. Don't know how much he can share about NSW specifics, but he can be a great resource on career options and possible pitfalls
