College football and congress

Before I start:
1) Does congress really have nothing better to do right now?
2) I agree that the bowl system works given the marketplace. Do you really think that a FCS team should play in the National championship game against USC, Ohio State, Texas, Florida, etc? Nobody wants to see ass rapings like that.
3) Even if they went to a playoff system, the playoff system would start in the conferences, just like *GASP* Conference Championship games. And then, before you could pit conferences against each other, you'd have to get into the very very messy and pee-pee slapping business of ranking the quality of each conference so you could seed teams properly. There'd be more lawsuits and criers to congress than there are now when that shindig went down.

Because lets face it, the real issue here is that Utah got its pee-pee slapped in the strength of schedule department last year, and despite going undefeated, didn't deserve a BCS bid. So they decide to go after the BCS about the whole automatic bid conferences vs non automatic bid conferences. The big conferences get auto bids mainly because every school and team in their conference has the potential to be contenders, and the top teams in those conferences ARE contenders, year in and year out. A school like App. State, while good, doesn't have the school size to draw good enough sponsors to field a national championship caliber team every year. Which is why their conference doesn't get an auto bid, and Places like the Pac-10, SEC, etc. do. (I bet Georgia and Florida EACH make more money a year on the Cocktail Party alone than App. States program brings in a year)

So now we've decided that the root of all this is money, and the need for vast sums of it for facilities, coaching, travel, etc. to field a championship caliber team. So now the money cat is out of the bag. Guess Congress is going to have to subsidize every schools football program that has less than 30k students and a 60K+ capacity stadium to draw in the big bucks.

Give me a fucking break Utah! Sure you went undefeated, and beat a couple of good opponents, but your schedule strength was LAUGHABLE, at best. You had no business running with the big dogs last year anyways, and your senator is up for re-election and thought this would be a good attention grabber to get re-elected.

2008 Schedules:
UTAH:
Michigan WON 25-23
UNLV WON 42-21
Utah State WON 58-10
Air Force WON 30-23
WEBER STATE WON 37-21
OREGON STATE WON 31-28
Wyoming WON 40-7
COLORADO STATE WON 49-16
New Mexico WON 13-10
TCU WON 13-10
San Diego State WON 63-14
BRIGHAM YOUNG WON 48-24
SUGAR BOWL: Alabama WON 31-1

So you beat a couple good teams.... Mainly Oregon state and Alabama. But you also played three "gimme" games, and any other year, Michigan would of meant something. But in 2008, Michigan was so easy everyone got a turn. I Hardly call Air Force a Challenging opponent for a big bad division one team that thinks they deserved a shot at the crystal football. SURE. they're a division one team, and while I love watching service academies play, we all know that they'll never be truly competitve year in and year out, because they can't go recruit that 400LB Linesman like the rest of the schools can.

so honestly, if you were truly a championship caliber team, you would have ran the train so hard on Air Force that your punter was taking snaps under center by the fourth quarter. Instead, you beat Air Force by a 7 point margin that could hardly have been considered .
And to tell you the truth, I don't even give you credit for the Alabama win, because if you would have gotten the shot at the crystal football like you wanted, you would have gotten your ass handed to you by Florida Instead.

Florida Schedule on the other hand, had one bullshit gimme game against the Citadel, and every other team has been a top 10 team at least once in the past five years.

Great rant. But wouldn't the playoff system just be for the FBS? Why would they even consider placing the FCS in the same playoff? Also, conferences already get their pee-pees slapped by the rankings, are they going to get their nipples twisted by being seeded?

I would rather Congress spend time on this stupid crap than much of the other crap they're doing lately that can screw everyone over. Throw out the 1500 page health care bill, bring on FBS oversight!

Government intervention in College Football. Great. Like it isn't fucked up enough already. I am sure they are loving this in Aggy Land. They probably think that they will get some of Texas' 5 Star recruits and some defensive coaches "redistributed" to them.
