I could be mistaken but I'm fairly sure that since they are volunteers, you only need to be a licensed pilot. My old man is a 06 in the Coast Guard and when he was flying they did alot of work with the Aux. Mainly auxillary boat crews, but they do have pilots as well. I'm also fairly sure that all planes are privately owned and cover a wide range of general aviation aircraft. The pilots do alot of serach and resuce and locating over due boats and air craft, plus a wide range of other duties. If I can find the site again, I'll post it here.
