Coast Guard Auxiliary

Does anyone know anything about flying with the USCG Auxiliary? What are requirements to join as pilot? What type(s) of aircraft do they fly? Any info appreciated.
P.S. Does the Navy have any type of program like this? I know USAF has CAP and USCG has Auxiliary.

I could be mistaken but I'm fairly sure that since they are volunteers, you only need to be a licensed pilot. My old man is a 06 in the Coast Guard and when he was flying they did alot of work with the Aux. Mainly auxillary boat crews, but they do have pilots as well. I'm also fairly sure that all planes are privately owned and cover a wide range of general aviation aircraft. The pilots do alot of serach and resuce and locating over due boats and air craft, plus a wide range of other duties. If I can find the site again, I'll post it here.

Does anyone know the ins and outs as becomming a Coast Guard aviator. I was browsing the web about this information. How I interpeted was that most aviators are retired military and end up as reserves in the Coast Guard. Moreover,the Coast Guard do not accept people as aviators. Rather he/she if already in the Coast Guard have to apply and then go to P-cola. Am I wrong? Does the Coast Guard have active duty aviators?

Coast Guard has many active duty aviators. All go through navy flight training and wear the same wings of gold. Traditionally the Coast Guard makes no promise of specific training. You apply for OCS and in the final weeks of OCS you apply for the field you want. There are very few Coast Guard officer program recuiters these days. I worked along side one at a career fair just the other day but failed to ask about pilot openings. Find a good phone number and start asking questions. BTW, the USCG usually has higher age limits then the Navy, so it can be an option for guys pushing the age limit. I don't think you will find a promise of flight school though. Have to bet on the come.

I've heard that you need to be in the USCG fleet for a year or two before being eligible from flight school. All the Coasties I saw at API were at least JGs if not LTs.

You only have to be on a boat if you go through the academy. I heard the CG just started a program for direct intry into flight school.
