Can you choose where you attend Primary?

I was wondering if you will get a choice as to where you'll attend primary. I'm sure the majority of people would like to go stay in Pensacola, but I would like to end up at Corpus if at all possible. Just curious how this process works. Thanks for help in advance

Yes and no.

Mostly no... or I'd be in Texas instead of Lower Alabama... and no one would ever go to Vance.

Needs of the Navy. Get used to it.

I have heard of the occasional drug deal where someone got to switch locations, but you'd need to find another student who wants to trade places with you.

thanks for the reply!

are there any volunteer type deals (ex. "who wants to go to Corpus, who wants to go to Vance? No takers means I start picking randomly...") because I would imagine most people want to stay in Pensacola...

You can volunteer for whatever base you might want, they may still be taking down preferences. When I went through API it was about 50/50 on who wanted to go to Corpus and who wanted to stay in Whiting, but it varies class to class. Plus, if they don't have enough people for a location one week they'll just randomly pick people to fill it in, regardless if the person picked had already been told to go to another base.

Marine side, right? (Well, if not, maybe this can answer the question for one that is...)
You come down from TBS and they take your request and try their best to get you where you want to go. If you get a stash job where the staff know your name and know you are working hard, you will have a greater chance of going where you want to go. I can tell you this with almost 100% certainty ... if you want Vance, you will get Vance.

They have to fill the spots with somebody, so there is a chance you will go where you might not want to go. Things usually workout pretty well and a majority of people get to go where they want.

Currently, they're not taking preferences. They will occasionally ask for volunteers for Vance, so if that's your preference, be sure to let someone know when you get there, to ensure you're one of the first people they go to.

Also, if you're married, make sure you get follow-on orders after commissioning if you want Whiting. Those are about the only two way I know of to get your desired primary location.

A lot of people just got picked up to go to Vance. It goes in waves.

If you really want to go to one over the other then ask. That is what I did and it worked out. They asked why and I said my wife's family is in Texas so I got to go to Corpus. They just don't like to put it out for people because it would get quickly out of hand.

wow when I went through we could chose where we wanted to go!

They used to try and give you your preference, but they couldn't always honor it. Eventually it came out that some morons who had been assigned somewhere other than where they requested (read Vance) started going med down intentionally to try to game the system. Apparently that pissed off the lieutenant in charge and now no one on the Navy side gets to choose. Married generally means Whiting, single means a crapshoot between Corpus and Vance.
